: Which carb for 12.7:1 496
68SS454 Apr 19th, 04, 2:31 PM Heres the final setup-
454 4 bolt block bored .030 over
Scat forged 4340 lightweight 4.25 Crank
Scat 4340 H-beam rods w/ARP hardware. .200 longer
SRP 12.7:1 dome pistons.
GM 325cc rectangle port heads
Lunati 402A8N 259/267@.050 .625 .625, 110 106
Victor Jr intake
Possibly NOS cheater 200 shot (havent decided)
Now, should I use a 1050 dominator or a 950 HP?
And do you guys think that this motor will propel a full weight 68SS into the 11's?
Thanks graemlins/beers.gif
mr 4 speed Apr 19th, 04, 2:37 PM What convertor/trans and gear do you plan on using? Any rear suspension mods?
I would go with a 950 or 1000HP Holley
Do you have those parts listed all ready? Waht made you decide on that combo of parts?
68SS454 Apr 19th, 04, 2:48 PM Mr. 4 speed
I already have the heads, block, crank and rods, and pistons.
The cam I decided on because UDHarold recommended it to a person with a similar combo (except a 454). Im not worried about running race gas. Im going to run a built TH400, and havent decided on converter yet (probably a 3500-4000)
Whats your take on the combo? I want all out performance w/ the parts I already have
doggy69 Apr 19th, 04, 2:55 PM Hell yes thats run into the 11's...lol with the 200 shot probably the 10's
mr 4 speed Apr 19th, 04, 3:11 PM I'm guessing you'll be running 3.73's-4.10's
Should be a handful..you will need ALOT of traction
11's ?!?!? I would think your goal should be 10's. It'll run 11's in drive with street tires.
Go for a 1000cfm double pumper, like the BG Race Demon on a team G intake.
68SS454 Apr 19th, 04, 3:26 PM Im shooting for as fast as I can, hopin for 10's on motor, then theres always the nitrous, I just always underestimate. That way i dont get disappointed as easily :D
Oh, and Mr. 4speed, im runnin 4.10's with a 28" tall BFG drag radial, 275/60 15's graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Mike Feudo Apr 19th, 04, 3:59 PM With that little of a convertor don't use a dominator.
chevy_69_chevelle Apr 19th, 04, 4:17 PM Mine gets mine into the 10.20 range.
454 + .030"
Dart Aluminum Heads 310cc
Solid Roller cam .660/.666 lift
stock stroke
full weight chevelle - fiberglass hood
11.5:1 compression
BTW....1050HP for me with an 8" ATI converter flash stall to 4500 (tested on the return road, at 2-3mph in third gear and then hammering the throttle) 4.33 gear
you should be in the 10 range easily (providing the tires stick)
68SS454 Apr 19th, 04, 7:17 PM What duration cam are you running?
chevy_69_chevelle Apr 19th, 04, 11:01 PM 292 298
254 260 @ .050"
chevy_69_chevelle Apr 19th, 04, 11:12 PM The team G is a great manifold. I am actually running the merlin single plane. I do plan on buying the team g and making a comparison.
Mike Feudo Apr 20th, 04, 9:25 AM chevy_69_chevelle, Have you tried any other combos? You have an awfull small cam for your carb and manifold. If you are using them because of traction problems thats one thing but I still say a 3500 convertor is no where near enough for a 1050 that dumps everything at once. I had real good luck with the factory 850 vac. carb on big motors that didn't have a trans brake.
68SS454 Apr 20th, 04, 11:26 AM Wow....that cam is small...
Kinda makes me wonder if I should rethink my cam choice. :(
chevy_69_chevelle Apr 20th, 04, 12:10 PM No other combos tested. I leave the starting line at 1800rpm and I have photos of my car with front wheels in the air, and the tack sitting at 5000rpm (just 6-8 feet out). BTW…best 60’ 1.43, I am shifting the car at 6800rpm in first, 7200rpm in second, and with the progress I am making I should be going through the lights in the ¼ at 7200-7400rpm. In the 1/8 I am going through the lights in third at 6600rpm so I don’t think that the carburetor is too big. I am currently running 39° advance on the distributor (all in by 2200rpm). Those dart pro1 heads (out of the box) flow a bunch:
Lift int. exh.
.200” 147 137
.300” 219 175
.400” 275 210
.500” 318 233
.600” 347 258
.700” 364 258
.800” 369 266
My next experiment: MSD timing retard box, lock out advance on distributor, and set advance to 42°, then have a switch that activates the timing retard in third gear to turn down advance to 38°. We will see what happens.
Milan Apr 21st, 04, 9:55 AM I had to buy a Dominator just cuz :D . My Combat rat is a mis-match of parts by most opinions Yet I believe Traction will be my only worrie. It spins the big mickeys like I was running spacesaver spares on marbles back there. My combo is in my sig(if it appears this time) The moderators may have eliminated it due to length. (How short does it need to be guys?) My 2 cents. If you take the time to become proficient at tuning the thing you can get by with a dominator. In addition you wont outgrow the carb as your ride gets more radical(that NEVER Happens right) Flipside if you got money to burn get a smaller one for now and if you want more just shell out $$$$$. My money was spent on the big carb the first time out.
