Does anyone know who does vent window re-chroming and rebuild? As far as I know they still don't make them for the 65's in the aftermarket.

I have a friend who rechromed and reassembled the 2 on his '64. When it was time for me to do mine on the '65 he advised me not to do them and to just use to best pair that I could find. ;)

I didn't find it that difficult on my 65. The windows dissassembled easily, except for taking the glass out of its small frame. I took those to a glass shop to take apart and put back together after re-chrome. Had the chrome parts re-chromed and the non-chrome parts I cleanded, rust treated, and painted. Put it all together and then put on the weather stripping. Haven't installed them in the car yet. That will be next week. Take lots of pictures when dissassembling.

Thanks Mike,

Beautiful car by the way! Where did you send your frames to have them re-chromed? I'm not really concerned about taking them apart but would like to find a good "how to" article if anyone knows where one can be found.

For a step-by-step description, go to www.landry-family.com (http://www.landry-family.com) and look for "Removal of vent window assembly from my '68 El Camino." I can't see the process being any different for your car and you'll find the photos very helpful.
You should also be able to find step-by-step instructions in the Fisher Body Service Manual.

The vent window frames on my '70 Elky were pitted and in need of re-plating. Instead of replating the originals, I bought a pair of used vent window assemblies in great condition from Dick at True Connections about a year ago. Perfect chrome and I didn't have to mess around removing and reinstalling the tinted glass. Even the frames and glass tracks that make up the assembly were in better condition than what came out of my doors. It ran me $80.00 for the pair. I would guess that it would cost close to that for re-chroming, shipping etc.

As for the re-building aspect, it's a pretty easy thing to do. You shouldn't have to pay someone to do it. The worst part is removing the window frames from the assembly to install new rubber - and that's simply removing the two rivets that hold the hinge bracket to the frame. Replace the originals with 1/8" x 1/8" pop rivets and you'll be all set.

Tim,

With my 65 vent windows, I didn't have to remove any rivets. The later model Chevelles have the rivets. The dissassembly and reassembly was very simple. The glass removes from the "V" shaped chrome with a good strong tug (I let an experienced glass guy do the tugging). I had the chrome pieces done by Sherm's of Sacramento (does the Riddler cars, very high quality). They are local to me. The main chrome piece is impressive in mass on the 65 when freshly done in quality chrome. There was an article on vent wing reseal on a 66 Chevelle in Car Craft, January 2008 issue. I think the hardest part of the task is removing, reinstalling, and aligning the assembly. Once it's out of the car, I'd say an hour to take apart and rebuild. Sending parts out for re-chrome takes the time. Well worth the effort if yours are pitted.

I replaced my 67 vent window assemblies with a pair from a 65 GTO. If your looking to replace, don't forget about all the 64-67 A bodies that will fit also.

Can anyone confirm if the 66~67 vent assemblies work for a 65? I have been told they don't. If not I have completely disassembled mine and will send out to have re-chromed.
