Went to Reynolds, GA this past Sat and ran a best of 13.10. Weather was great and got to make a bunch of passes. My goal was to break 12.9? I'm getting close. Couldn't get my 60' below 1.95. I have a best of 1.88 but at a different track. I thought my car was hitting the rev limiter( Crane HI-6) set at 6300 but the motor was actually cutting out at 5900. Car pulls fine up to this point. I had a buddy of mine tell me he could see black smoke out the tail pipes when it did this. I'm thinking ignition which btw is an Accel HEI. Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

David

David, congrats on your new best graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Sounds like a lean condtion maybe? How's the fuel system? Whats your 1/8 mile MPH compared to your 1/4 mile MPH?

Wow...you're making pretty good power to run that ET/MPH in a 72 Monte Carlo. I bet that thing scales near 4200 lbs. with driver.

Thanks Chris! I don't have my time slip with me but I remember that my 1/8 mile was a 8.38 @ around 83.? mph. My mph at the 1/4 was 103.? I just have a stock fuel pump and lines from the tank. I have a 6 AN line to the carb. When I put the motor in I wanted to put a Carter Street/Strip pump but because the way the motor sets back in the Monte's the pump wouldn't clear the cross member. I was hoping that the stock pump would supply enough fuel. Maybe not.

Mike, Yep the Monte is a heavy car. They had scales at the track but I was having so much fun I forgot about them. But I bet your close on the weight. Although I only go about a buck 65. :D

My cousin has a 72 Monte that is essentially one-owner, his mom bought it new. Orange with black interior, 350-2bbl, all stock and original. It's ENORMOUS...my 69 Chevelle goes 3900 with me on board, and I'm sure the Monte is 200-300 heavier.

graemlins/hurray.gif ,I run the same e/t 13.1 with 1.88 -60 best. 8.3 1/8 ,with no headers ,I installed the headers (no test with headers) . As Chris C said "how is the fuel system ?"
I was asked in another post, "what size of fuel line you are using? "My car was a 6 cyl. origial motor .I was told that it got 5/16 fuel tank pickup line .
The last TIME I went to the track a friend did noticed the same problemyou mention "black smoke out of tail pipes and that the car was maybe hitting the limiter"because he can hear it from half track down . I put the limiter to 7000rpm and next run same e/t but did not find my friend to ask how it run in the other pass (that is a problem with helmet ),but now I am sure it was fuel pressure problems because of the 5/16 line .I am moving to 1/2" line got some work to do .

I want to hit a good 12's,another thing I was told that with the new headers this is going to be worst ,If you got the stock fuel line verify it with a fuel gauge inside the car at a full pass this may be your problem to ,HOPE you can hit your 12' soon graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Fuel system sounds like a place to start. I'll check it out. Don't know if I'll get it worked out by this Fri. Gonna give it one more try to get 12.9? I never thought I would have to go with bigger fuel lines from the tank. How hard is it to plumb new lines?

First verify what fuel line size it got ,if your car was an 6 cyl . you got 5/16 ,I am not sure if all V8 ,SBC and BBC all came with 3/8 fuel line and 3/8 fuel tank pick up line ,do a little search in TC ,if you got the 3/8 verify cracks in the line hoses or rusty line it can be pulling air that sound more simple to start .but I also was told to be carefull that a piston can be damage by going to lean ,so be carefull

verify my last topic , all this was advised to me by others T/C members in this post: ANY FAST FULL BODY CHEVELLE WITH RECTANGULAR PORT HEADS?

as far as I know all 6-cyl and most all 2-bbl V-8 cars have a 5/16 line. Mine own car is a prime example, was a 307 2-bbl, now is a 406. If I were to take it to the track I'd have to change the line first. I wouldn't run it in the 1/4 with a 5/16 line.

My fuel line is 3/8". I think 3/8" would be large enough. Could the stock fuel pump be the problem?
Thanks!

Good to hear you do not got to do the fuel line pick up jop and that is maybe only the fuel pump ,someone with better knowledge than me tell you what to use ,but you should put a better pump anyway ,wy don't give a try with a carter120gph pump ? or even better the 172 gph pump .

I see that 12's coming soon !

Thanks for the reply Jav. I would like to stay with a mechanical pump. The problem is the pump diaphram housing has to be stock diameter cause anything larger hits the front cross member. Does anyone know of a mech pump that is stock size that would be up to the task? I guess I could go electric. Would I have to plumb a return line to the tank?

Thanks

Well I found the problem and was fuel pressure (Thanks Chris). Gauge verified this while I had it on the dyno. Pressure would drop steady as the rpm's went up. Right around 5900 0 psi. I'm kinda limited to aftermarket mech pumps cause the housing hits the front cross member. This is a problem with 1st gen Montes. I'm going to try a holley 110 gph pump which I've been told will work in hopes that it will solve the problem. Track is closed for the winter. Guess I'll have to wait till Feb.

mc71454 uses a carter 172 on a 71 monte,included a link to pic. carter 172 (http://www.chevelles.com/forum/ultimatebb.php/topic/4/22875.html#000000)

Thanks JRS70LS5.

I wonder if the 172 fit cause he is running a b/b? Maybe this places the mounting point of the pump in the block a little more forward and that allows for the clearence of the cross member. I tried a carter street/strip. Wouldn't fit.

Thanks again!
