My 66 always seemed to be more stable at high speeds with the tailgate down. In the dragstrip application it would put the weight of the tailgate back farther for better weight distribution. 66 has a HEAVY tailgate.

Klaus, Is that a marine carb that your running?

MM Racing
Dec 25th, 07, 12:07 AM
I tried the tailgate down thing and it didn't work. It just wanted to bounce when I hit second gear, then it would spin the tires. And there was no MPH difference at all... probably due to the tire spin.

My 66 always seemed to be more stable at high speeds with the tailgate down. In the dragstrip application it would put the weight of the tailgate back farther for better weight distribution. 66 has a HEAVY tailgate.

Klaus, Is that a marine carb that your running?
no,its a 850 holley annular booster carb with a custom fabricated(me) overflow tube to control gas sloshing out the front vent tube off the line:thumbsup:

Dec 25th, 07, 2:42 AM
Mythbusters proved that there is less drag with the tail gate UP. They didnt test an el camino but a pick up truck which is probably close enough... Supposed to be MYTH! If you are getting 2-3mph more maybe it is because more weight moved back slightly? I doubt an el camino is any different then a regular pickup truck. Did you do real side by side comparisons or do it on different days with different conditions?

Here is my 66 as it is being loaded for the trip to Texas.
Now undergoing an AT to MT changeover
Windshield and rear window reveal rust issues----minor.
This car lived it's whole life in Idaho, and there was still paint on the bottom when I got it. Pretty much unmolested car.
Original 327 gone tho.
I had been aware of this car for several years and was the first person called when it came up for sale.
My better half is so sweet-----she allowd me to buy this car a full year before the 59 was registered for the street.:hurray:

Thanks for the compliments! They are '56 Chevy caps from Coker - and yes, they are 15" Rallyes. I saw a Nova in SC with the wheels body color and poverty caps and liked the 'sleeper' look. Wheels are powder coated for easy maintenance and durability.

ok, I wanted to wait until it was done, but couldn't help myself. Wife's grandfathers car, he purchased it brand new. She wouldn't let me sell it, so I decided to make it into something I can use as a daily driver, plus I've never had a muscle car.
Ad it looks now, will be painted by the end of next month, same factory blue color:

http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u241/oobus12/IM001408.jpg

No more 307, 2000 corvette shortblock w/ls2 goodies on the top end, should be good for 400+hp:

http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u241/oobus12/IM001410.jpg

New Covan dash, steering wheel. I've got all new interior ready to go in after paint, including some beautiful blue 2004 GTO seats:

http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u241/oobus12/IM001409.jpg

Parts waiting for paint before they go on: C5 wheels and disc brakes, Functioning Cowl Hood, new outside mirrors (70 Camaro), posi with adj. uppers.

Don't get mad, but it's Fxxd Probe Yellow. It was only available one year (96 or 97, I can't remember which) and we came across it by chance. In addition we added gold pearl to the clear which is what makes it pop. Considering it was painted in '00, it's holding up pretty well.

Oh, and thanks!

Here's a few pics of my '70. Traded my '56 Bel Air to a friend for this car (+cash) a couple of years ago. Since then I added the black accents (grill, hood rocker panels and wheel well trim), axed the 350 in favor of a 383, instead of trying to repair the factory A/C I installed a Classic Auto Air kit, replaced the sweep dash with a Dakota Digital set-up, replaced sagging springs w/OEM springs, boxed lower control arms w/sway bar, 12 Bolt posi and tinted windows. Wheels/tires and mirrors, too. It sits a bit higher than what I wanted, but I'll live with it.

Sweet. What type of finish is that on your bed?

Deacon Don
Jan 5th, 09, 9:11 PM
After owning a succession of muscle cars in the 70s including a '67 Cutlass, '68 Cutlass convertible, '70 Camaro SS, '72 Charger (very brief association) and a '74 GTO (another brief association), I've endured a near 35 year hiatus from muscle cars. I've re-entered the fray after awakening the long-dormant desire when junior managed to win the Optima Full Ride contest . We attended the unveiling of his "Full Ride" Chevelle at the 2006 SEMA show in Las Vegas and, after taking in the show, my fate was sealed. My new toy is a 1964 El Camino sporting a 355 mouse that roars coupled to a 411 posi via the TH400 with a 3000 Stahl. In spite of owning the car for nearly two years, I've rarely driven it due in large part to its being "held hostage" for quite a while by the painter. Artists, go figure! Anyway, I got it back in late Septmber '08 and had been having a great deal of fun with it until the time came to put her to bed for the winter. She's by no means a "Trailer Queen" show car but she is mine and lots of fun to drive while continuing her restoration. I have to admit that one of the first things I did when I bought her back in December of '06 was to join Team Chevelle but have rarely posted on the site. It is, however, a great site and a great resource.
The attached photos chronicle when I first acquired her, a Saturday spent with the son at the 1st day of the 2007 HRPT and a couple "in progress" shots of the paint saga. A second post will follow with some snaps of her to date. Enjoy!

No I had no idea!!! The price was so cheap that when the guy told me it ran & drove I went right over there. It turned out the guy I sold it to had died & willed it to his son(who was about 6 yrs old when I sold it to his dad) & the car wound up in his step dad's pole barn It was exactly as I sold it same belt's hoses, oilfilter dist. cap everything. I know this because i owned a NAPA store at the time & I replaced everthing & it was all still there. He had put about 3K miles on it & then it sat. I was always mad that i sold that car so when the door opened & I saw it I grabbed it. The cool thing is I have a pic of it with my daughter in front of it when she was 3 she is now 23

Truth be known, for some reason the Elky photographs way better than the 10-foot/15 year old (best guess) paint looks in person. They pull the 'Edit'

Me too! I have a soft spot for those "fat" Elkys. An old GF had a 77(?, square headlights) in red and black w/black interior that was really sweet. I loved driving that...err... car,... of course.

Here's 3 of the cell phone pics that my daughter took of her 78 when we picked it up last summer. She only sent me three because someone wanted to see what the factory vinyl top looked like. I need to get better and more current pics.

It will be coming out of storage some time this month. Dad is getting excited.:hurray:
But Dad reeeeally needs to get rid of an entire 1984 Lincoln Mark VII first. (Help me out fellas, everybody knows at least one Ford guy).

We have to get the Elky ready for an ~800 mile trip from Cleveland to Valdosta, Ga when she goes back to school in August after summer break. She's been sending interior pieces from Ecklers all winter and I bought her a dash cap and other goodies for Christmas.
I just ordered a replacement reman Q-jet and she has the rear lower quarter patch panels and a new tailgate shell sitting in her dorm room. That's my girl! Car parts in the living room!

I retired it last fall when I got an 85 Mark. I've pulled off all of the parts that I need, so it's gotta go...SOON. I don't have any room to store anything right now, especially with the Elky and my sons BMW and all of their spare parts.

thats what we were thinking, we sold/ gave away what was left of the working air bag suspension, as well as the air control deal for the seats and stuff, the back seat got traded for a pair of 10 inch subwoofers  everything else was basically scraped

Is the trim piece on the rear quarter from the taillight to the back of the door stock on the pictures in the above post by TexasAg? I have never seen this before. Was it an option and if so what years was it available?
Yes this is a factory chrome item. One that i am in desperate need of for gmc sprint build up.This is used in order for two tone paint scheme. It is not available after market. If any one knows where I can get this I would appreciate it.. Glen

for some reason I like that. Is that just in black primer or is it a satin paint?

I want my elky in satin black

For now it is just primer. Once I get the back window done I do plan to have the car painted in a satin finish. I like the look and as I do the bodywork I can marble can the work areas to match. I am going to replace the fenders, but all the rest (which the satin hides well) will just be weeks of work. With this finish, I can pick and choose my projects and the car always looks done. Once all is straight, repaint and add some type of flame or stripe in a gloss paint, with the flat might look kool. We'll see.

It's a numbers matching 396/375, with the original engine, bucket seat/console/4 speed and 355 rear, with a build sheet. I spent almost a year on this project. Lots of late nights, and bloody knuckles, but in the end, it was just what I was hoping for.

Yea, I always wanted an El Camino, and I always liked Orange. I also wanted a solid lifter car, and although this car was a piece of junk, it had everything I was looking for. So a year later, and few less bucks in my bank account, I got the Elky I'd wanted since my childhood.

Thanks Jim! Nice to hear from ya.

I tried borrowed MT slicks 28s, borrowed MT DRs 28s, then bought some BFG DRS, ran 1.81 60s with all three with my Hughes 2500 converter. Was not picking up 20, only 19 and change mph gain the last half of the run. I upgraded to a B&M 3000 that flashes at 3400..some other changes...and there ya have it. Better 60's and more mph after the converter swap. I run the BFGs at 18 psi, best results so far.

Not that the Elky is particularly quick/fast in the overall scheme of things...but for a bargain 454 build and street gears...sweet!

There's some beautiful rides here!! That 59 makes me drool, I've replaced my keyboard twice now because of this one, lol. I had a 59 in high school (project) but off loaded it after being in the Navy for a few years. The car was just sitting at home, and I had no idea when I could actually get around to it, I still regret getting rid of that car.

I remember seeing it in the magazine and thinking that it was the meanest car that I'd ever seen, and then I saw it at the Charlotte Autofair a few months later. As a little kid it was like seeing a celebrity, looking at a magazine car in person like that.
