I have a chevelle with a 350 and i was wondering how much work/what steps would be involved, to put a big block 502 in it. Thanks

The small block has the same chassis mounts as the big block. It should bolt in just fine. I cant remember if the big block engine mounts on the engine block itself are the same though.

I think there is a tech article that covers this swap in here. Someone may have a link.

What year car do you have?

Chris.

Since a BBC was a chevelle option it will bolt in with no major modifications. That being said there are a few things to consider. Front springs matched to the extra weight. A rearend (12 bolt) that can take the power. A trans that can take the power (turbo 400) and a driveshaft with the right lenth and correct yoke (it will also change the placement of the emergency brake cable when you move the cross member for the turbo 400). Most 502 blocks dont have accept a mech fuel pump, so a electic fuel pump is required. And with the extra power a lager fuel line maybe a good idea. You are also looking at needing a bigger radiator and fan shroud for a big block. Plus if you don't have the proper access brackets you will need to find a set. I would also expect that a larger exhaust maybe a good idea. On the plus side a 502 in chevelle should really rock and roll, and when you raise the hood the wow factor is hard to beat. Good luck.

rianbechtold, It should fit like it was put in at the factory with big block engine mounts and accessories. A beefed up ATI Turbo 350 uses less power than a 400 Turbo and has the same output splines as a standard transmission. We have only hurt the little trans. once through bad burnout procedures and my son's car runs 9s. If you get the aluminum head 502/502 there is an additional 125 pounds on the front end. 68chevelle533 is right about the 502s needing an electric fuel pump. I believe the 454 crate motors have a fuel pump boss on the block.

A BBC uses the same chassis mounts as a SBC. You need BBC engine mounts though.

Do a search...

Here is the link to the Tech reference article on this site on the conversion: It's pretty simple you just ned new headers and brackets for the alternator and steering pump.
