I have got a freshly rebuilt 454 out of a 1996 suburban. It has about 7000 mile since rebuild. All stock internals, edlebrock performer RPM intake, Edlebrock 600 cfm carb, headman headers, orange paint and chrome valve covers. All boltons are brand new. Engine looks beautiful. I think it makes around 480 HP. It is currently in a 1966 chevy C10 pickup with a four speed manual tranny. How much is the engine worth with and without the truck?

Are they still the stock heads? Is the cam upgraded? You say the internals are stock so I guess the pistons haven't been changed to something with a little more compression. With only bolt on items how can this be making 480hp? Unless I read this wrong then it's worth about $2000.

I need to get a little more information but I was told by the guy who built it that it was stock, and making about 460-480 hp.

Alright guys, I may not know that much about engines and how to determine how much HP they make, but I recognize sarcasm when I see it and it is not helpful. I am trying to get an honest answer with the information that I have. I appreciate any real help that you can offer, for instance; What information do you need in order to tell me what it is worth?

Sorry, I couldn't help myself. ;) So to try to offset my unhelpful sarcasm, I'll offer this.

Used engines are hard to nail down prices on unless you can give specific components on the build up, dyno'ed HP etc. and give confidence to the potential buyer, that it was done right.

Here's an example on Ebay that gives an approximate vaugue description as yours. Watching this, will give you a rough answer in 3 days based on the information given.

Alot of it also simply boils down to finding a buyer within a local pick-up distance because nobody like to pay additional freight charges.

Here's another one offered at 3K, but it's brand new, with Warrenty, a detailed description of the rebuild process and components used.

No offense to your description, but it is lacking and without these types of specifics, and an accurate rating of Horsepower as appossed to an obviously inflated guess, i think Joe's opinion is generous.

Alot has to do with how well the Ad is written, that the seller is knowledgable, and that the engine was built correctly.

Stating it is a 480HP Stock 1996 Suburban motor will scare more than draw because it likely isn't fact. (hense the sarcasm)

The best advice I can give you is to contact the builder and have him give you exact specifics on the build, component specifications and an accurate estimate of HP and torque so that the Ad gives these specifics and better credance.

If not, you may not get more than standard core charge.

Hope that's a little better. :D

2000-2500 keep it in the truck so people can hear it run. otherwise maybe 1000 and good luck

is the 96 a gen V? if it is, you might find someone with a burb that needs a motor. Like others said, leave it in the truck, let interested party take it for a test drive. jim

John, I thank you for a much better picture of how to find out what this thing is worth. I will try to contact the builder. He is my friends dad. I should be able to get some more specifics.

You did actually give a fair description in your first statement. Biggest thing to know value from there will be the exact heads on the motor (casting #'s). I don't think there's any way he made >400hp even with modified Vortec heads ... so I'm assuming he's changed the heads to something else. You'll need to know the exact casting #, and what work/rebuild work was done to the heads.
