: Bonspeed 18x9/18x10 backspacing advice needed...
musclecarjohn Dec 18th, 07, 3:19 PM Hey guys,I'm thinking of getting a set of Bonspeed Huntington's in the new "textured" cast powdercoat they offer (introduced at SEMA) and need advice on b/s.
Would 5" be about right on a 9" wide front wheel?How about on the 10" wide rear...would 5 3/4" be about right...or should I consider 6"
Wheels can be seen @ www.bonspeedwheels.com I am considering a brushed rim (clearcoated) with the grey centers for the P/T look.Sort of what I have now but with correct b/spacing and wider to take up all that space in the wheelwells.

Personally I'd rather see 17s, those just look too big to me and not enough rubber, but thats just my opinion *shrugs*

Having run a 17x9 front wheel with 5" backspace and 275/40 tire,I would definitely run more backspacing with that width on the front,John. 5"bs required me to replace the stock hexhead inner fender bolts with buttonhead units, for adequate tire clearance. If it were my car,I would run 5.5" backspacing on the 18x9's and at least 5.75" on the 18x10's. What size tires were you planning to run;275/35's on the front and 295/35's on the rear?
724tim Dec 19th, 07, 4:41 PM In the new issue of popular hot rodding there is a 1970 chevelle running
17'' x 11'' with 6'' backspacing hope that helps somewhat
LateNight72 Dec 19th, 07, 4:56 PM Sorry can't help. But I got bored, so here's the turn out:

Thanks guys,I was hoping Clint the expert:thumbsup:...would chime in.
Good advice on the fronts Clint,my car sits very low and I am concerned about tire-to-fender clearance.
I was looking at 265/35's & 285/35's but I'd rather go bigger all around.Sumitomo used to make a 315/35 but no longer and everything else available in that size are $$$ more.
I hear you on the fender bolts too man,I've got the center ones out of every car I own.
Should I go more than 5.75 b/s on the rears....?
thunderstruck507,
I hear you on the sizing...in those first pics I posted, that was with the 18/20 combo...and I'm not digging the look of that rear wheel/tire either:noway:...that's why they're for sale. The 18's all-around seem perfect to me...17's just seem to small to me,I've had several sets of them on there too.
Here's pictures I shot last wknd,17x9 (5.5"b/s) w/285/40's on front (stolen from the rear of my '70Z...as you can see;))and 18x8 w/285/35's on the rear...I was mocking it up to see how it fit:

That is awesome man...thanks for the visual!
Of course, that was with the 20's on the rear...18's all-around with that wheel looks killer!
Thanks again...
Chief fat nutz Dec 20th, 07, 12:43 AM MCJohn,I was doing some measuring with some TTII's off a buddies car a month ago and it looks like we've found 18x10 would be good with a 6" b.s.. I was gonna go big in the rear myself with a 305/45R18 by Nitto. Its probobly taller than what you want but they also make a 315/35R18 too which is about 2.5" shorter! I think they are 25.6"
Either way,should look sick!
Personally,18's would look much better than 20's. IMHO but everyones diff. Can't wait to see your pics man:D

MJRIBEIRO Dec 20th, 07, 10:59 AM John - I second Clint's advice (as if I'd contradict it....) I'm running a 275 on 9.5" fronts with 5.5 bs. If I had to do it all again I'd do 5.75 - 5.5 should be very good on a 9" wheel.

Thanks again man, that's what I want to hear...real world experience.
Soooo...It's sounding like 18x9 fronts w/5.5" b/s & 275/35 rubber and 18x10 rears (5.75" b/s) w/295/35's...unless I can find some 315's:D
bdc1013 Dec 20th, 07, 12:13 PM those 17's off your z look like the perfect size to me... i would not go any bigger but its your car... why dont you do 17x9.5 in the front and 18x11 in the back?
you sure do spend alot of money on wheels and tires... i still have stock wheels and tires because i just cant choose something, spend all that money, and then regret it. When i have more money to blow im sure it'll happen though. BUT thanks to guys like you, trying every combo imaginable, maybe i'll just keep track and see what i like. haha

Yeah...I'm known for swapping a wheel or two in my time:yes:...the guys @ www.nastyz28.com laugh at me all the time.
I originally wanted to do 18x9.5's/18x11's but these are not standard sizes in the Bonspeed line and to have them made in those widths cost a ton more $$$!
I have had several sets of 17's on this car and I just don't like how they look,IMHO.17's are too small, and 20's are too big...18's seem just about perfect to me but an 18/19 combo might be sweet.
Here it is with the 17" AR200S's...I thought I'd like it but didn't:noway::

I have many, many sets of wheels...that's just my thing.;)
I like the factory SS 14" wheel for period correctness,I have two sets of those including one w/Coker Goodyear Polyglass rubber on it.
bdc1013 Dec 20th, 07, 1:26 PM i love those 17's!!!! man they look sweet! i really need to do something about my stock 71 SS rims. I want something that looks just like them but in 17. Maybe The AR torqlite with darker paint in the middle than that light grey. that would be SICK!

bdc1013 Dec 20th, 07, 4:35 PM so what did you do with all your old 17's?
ProdigyCustoms Dec 20th, 07, 11:13 PM We use and sell a lot of Bonspeed wheels. Just today we got a set of 18" Malibu's for a 1970 GTO we are doing in the shop. Let me check out the backspaces and see how they fit. I have a Chevelle I can try them on also to be doubley sure.
musclecarjohn Dec 21st, 07, 10:26 AM so what did you do with all your old 17's?
17's are all staying (except for the pair of 17x8 AR 200S's which are for sale),the set of 18's and the pair of 20's are for sale as well.
Thanks Frank for your fitment offer...;)
bdc1013 Dec 21st, 07, 11:08 AM john... i just realized you're close to me. Have you heard of the Nor-cal chevelle caminos? When i get my car done i wouldn't mind taking a ride to Monterey to meet you and check out your rides. I had my car all together after the tko swap but now i have the engine and trans out to take care of some things i'd been putting off.
This is the last time my car ran, it's on highway 1
the rims are the stock 15x7 all around. 235 70s on the front and 275 60's on the back

What size wheels and tires are in this picture. I am going thru the same process right now with my 69 conv. I think I have settled on 17x8or9 front 18x10 rear with 285-40-18.
I really want to hit it right the first time.
musclecarjohn Jan 11th, 08, 11:49 AM Those pics are of the 18/20 set-up,both 8" wide w/265/35-18's in front and I believe 295/30-20's in the rear.
They are for sale...going in a different direction.I have one complete set of 18's (two w/285/35 rubber) and a pair of 20's.
