I had a one piece Fel pro gasket but found a bunch off little pieces floating around in the pan when I recently removed it.

May go back to the standard 4 piece deal.

What brand/part number is everyone using?

I'm still using the one piece. I haven't had the pan off, but I haven't seen anything come out when I change the oil or in the filter.

I never seemed to remember any pieces coming out when I change the oil either. Most of the stuff was stuck under the windage screen built into the pan.

where is it coming off the gasket? crank shaving pieces off? material deteriorating and falling apart? I've had excellent luck with these gaskets, wonder what might be going wrong.

The pieces came off the curved part where it meets the rear main cap. The portion that fell off was the small inside lip, not the whole curved part. I'm guessing it's likely deterioration. The pan did not leak, just found small pieces in the pan.

Also, the front curved part (small lips), both inside and out were separating as well.

I can't remember how old this gasket is/was. I may be fine using another 1 piece, just not sure. In the past I have had problems with the 4 piece gaskets leaking which is one main reason I went to the 1 piece.

Wonder if the vacuum pump played a role in this? How much vacuum are you running? If the vacuum pump was the issue, might be worse with a 4 piece pan gasket?

Don't know if the VP was a related issue or not. I have the pump bypass set at 11" max.

I had the Fel Pro one-piece blue rubber/silicone gasket for my 540, but it was too thick over the crank area, and too hard. It simply didn't fit right on my Dart Big M block with Milodon competition drag race oil pan. I tossed it and instead went with the Mr. Gasket gray version one-piece rubber/silicone pan gasket. It is softer and is the correct thickness over the crank area. I've only had it on during mock-up so far, but it fit much better and seemed to be better quality than the Fel-Pro piece. I wouldn't hesitate to go with Mr. Gasket again. I don't have the part number with me, but it shouldn't be too hard to come up with.

I noticed this on my 496 too when I pulled my pan the last time. I think the cause could be the rods hitting the gasket.

Rods aren't anywhere close to where mine was breaking apart. Mine were on the front & rear curved end rails.

A number of people have had issues with Fel-Pro 1 piece with at least leaking problems. The Fel-Pro 1 piece I tried leaked and seemed to fit sloppy-to loose. I think Rowdy had some leaking problems with his, and Mike Lewis has talked about this here on TC. Went back to Fel-Pro 4 and no problems. Have used SCE 4's without problem also. Like the way 540 Rat use of Mr. Gasket 1 piece, sounds like it fits better!

I dont know what GM uses on their crates but I've had mine on/off 4x so far so good. It black and seems like a good fit. Question, are you running a small bead of RTV across the main cap and timing cover or just hitting all 4 corners? Or nothing?

Here is the only thing I could find on PBM gaskets:

http://www.pbmperformance.com/pbmhome.html

And here is a link to the catalog pages the gaskets are on:

http://www.pbmperformance.com/downloads/PBMcatalog2005_71_104.pdf

The BBC oil pan gasket is about $30 according to their price list. Don't know if this is the same PBM as I have read about on here before. I checked on the Mr. Gasket one as well and seems like it was like $42. I can't seem to make myslef spend $40+ on an oil pan gasket.

I am looking to do something different on my oil pan gasket as well with my new build. Last 2 one piece gaskets I have used have leake. I like them for ease of use, but just can't have any luck with them. They always leak around rear cap, and the last one was giving me trouble at front around timing cover. The lips around the timing cover were tearing as well when I tore engine down. This was with a milodon pan. I plan on using the 1804 4 piece like the one Wolfplace says he uses.

That second link Chad mentioned is it. They private label and sell product. I heard problems with the Fel Pro and didn't use it.

And yes, the price on their 1 pc is pretty reasonable and was a nice part.

Doug- What oil pan did you use it with? Just wondering if you used it with an aftermarket like Milodon or Moroso or a stock GM pan. Did you install with sealer or dry? And did you buy directly from PBM? Thanks.

I use one of the std moroso 7 qts. Mike Lewis recommened adding some sealer so I dabbled some here and there. I think I put a thin film on things, right or wrong. I hate leaks.

I have a buddy who is a WD for them and got if from him.
