: Disposable cell phones...??
Hughski Dec 16th, 07, 6:41 PM Has anyone used these and if you have any recommendations I'd appreciate the help. I'll be going out of state if that matters any.
:D Yes I'm one of the holdouts refusing to get a cell until I absolutely need one all the time instead of a short term need like now.

Like you use them and throw them away?
Maybe your talking about a track phone? Where you just buy minute cards as you go. No contract. They are good if you can't get credit for a cell phone, other than that they cost more than they are worth. They are popular with people they need a phone and don't need their name attached to it in any manner, if you know what I mean. Contracts, such but your gonna want a phone for two years anyhow and it will cost less in the long run. Not to mention you can get insurance for a few dollars more. Its worth it, I've been thru three phones already this year. I just pay a $50.00 deductible and a new phone is overnighted. You can even say the phone fell in the Mississippi and they'll send you a new one. Ask me how I know.

Buzzbomb Dec 16th, 07, 11:24 PM Virgin Mobile is great...Trac phone sucks. You can get a cheaper Virgin Mobile phone with 20 free minutes included. All you have to do is top up with 20 bucks...every 90 days! There is no way you can get any cheaper than that for a cell phone; I checked all teh "minute payer" phones out. I am a relatively infrequent (not constantly attached to my ear) cell phone user, and would NEVER be bound to a stupid contract when Virgin Mobile is so much cheaper over the long run for people that aren't constantly on the phone. Some of the higher end phones aren't half bad either. Check them out..

novaderrik Dec 16th, 07, 11:41 PM i like my "T Mobile to go" prepaid phone. it only costs me $50 a year for 500 minutes, which is about as much as i'm willing to spend on something i barely use.
it is a full function phone- i can send texts, videos, and pics and surf the net as well as making calls. it just eats up more of my air time.
and if you phone dies or gets broken, just go buy another $20 phone anywhere and put your SIM card in it and you are good to go with all your minutes and stored numbers intact as long as you save them to your sim and not the phone memory.
when it is time to recharge the air time, you can either buy a card at any gas station and enter it right on your phone, or use a credit/debit card right on the phone in about a minute.
ChaosEnvy Dec 16th, 07, 11:50 PM I guess it depends on what you do.. I know my cell phone goes over 1400 minutes a month during peak times and another 1000 or so night and weekend. I don't know what track phone or T-mobile minutes cost, but if it is less than what I am paying, then I may just have to check into that. My contract expires in March.

If you are using your phone that much (1400 peak, 1000 off peak) a pre paid phone is NOT something you want.

Exactly my situation, and exactly what I use. It's $0.18 a minute, which isn't all that great, but $20 usually lasts me a couple months anyway. No other cell phone rates compare, and NO CONTRACTS.

Yea, the nice thing is the balance keeps piling up on it! I've actually thought about getting one of the new camera phones and transferring my minutes so I can utilize the accumulating "time". The new Cyclops phone they have is actually a pretty decent little phone camera, and it isn't all that expensive. If you get fed up with it, or your needs change, you move on. You don't get hit with some $200 cancellation fee.
For those of us who don't use a cell all that frequently, there really is nothing cheaper out there, and the coverage and service is pretty good, IMHO. Even AAA's emergency only phone isn't as cheap per month, last time I checked!
