I have a mild 396BB and i am looking for a cam that will pust my 70'SS into the 13's. I really want to do a mock up of the L-88 but i like some different alternatives. I am running a 4-speed with 3:73 posi-trac out the back.

It wont take much cam to do that. Please fill in some data for good recommendations from the folks here...
Compression ratio, type of heads, which 4 speed tranny, intake/carb, do you need engine vacuum to run power brakes ?????
BBMike here runs mid-12s with a 402, 3.73s and a Lunati 302A7LUN, 280/288 duration hydraulic cam.
WELCOME to Team Chevelle!
Again, please fill in all the relevant data, and the 396 folks will chime in.
You going with a solid lifter, ala L88, or a hydraulic? Most solid cams are pretty big for a 396. I use a 402A3LUN, and it would make power in a 402 from ( I guess here) 3200-7200. So you'd sure think it was an 88. Trouble is, 3.73s arent enough gear. Do the math on your shift points with 3.73 and you'll find that something in the 6300 peak range will work.
Here's some nice cams.....

For $180, I'd have a 272 ( 402A1LUN)done on a 108 LSA IF their cam designer , Harold Brookshire, OKs it on a 396. You'll want all of 10:1 with this.
Comp has a new line of solids you might look at. Something like their XS268XE might work. I don't think they'll be high revvers for the durtation you're looking for. A simple 270S might fit the bill here....

The 270B under the marine section would defintely feel like an L88 motor in your 396, but let someone with knowledge over at Comp guide you on that one......
Also check into the ISKY line, they used to make a Z-25 small solid, but I don't see it in their catalog anymore.
These are all solid flat tappet grinds, if you want a squishy lifter...I'll shuttup and let the 396 boys answer your question... ;)
Short answer, your goals are way doable. Plenty of 396s here running those numbers. Also, be careful of going too big in your cam selection. L88 or not, you dont want a stone......
Before you start chewing on all the info I've thrown out at you, please post the rest of your specs so the 396 crowd can weigh in with their recommendations. graemlins/waving.gif
