Hey all,

Thought about getting a Gtech for a while, didnt want to pay $100 whateverdollars for it. Seems like some guy on Ebay has them for a ridiculously low price, and his feedback seems to be legit. Is the price he is selling these for worth it?

From anyones experience, Just how accurate are they? Seems like an attractive price, at least its not an arm and a leg! AND NO, Im not affiliated with teh seller in any way. I just happened to be on another board and saw a post about the below auction tongue.gif

I don't know how accurate they are but it sure is a good price. I'm thinking of getting one myself just to play with.

Anyone own one now? What do you think?

I think it would be a good power-tuning tool, but I wouldn't put much stock in the ET's it gives you.

That's about what I figured. I'll decide tonight if I want to drop the coin on it. It sure would be a nice tool for playing around with jetting, timing and such.

Ah what the hell - I ordered one. I have to give it a try for $60. I'll let you know what I think of it.

Adam,

What do you think of it? Is it a help in tuning. Is it anywhere close to strip ET's? Just curious to know what you think.

Im thinking about getting one too...I think I read somewhere that it is pretty close with E/Ts, of course it wont be spot on, but Id bet there is some margin of error at the track too. I'm thinking it might be a neat tool to add to the tune up box.. I, like Troy, am wondering about in the field experiences with it.

I borrowed one from Gene and my friends and I used it quite a bit. I have no way to measure the accuracy of the cornering g-force measurements but it did seem consistant.

Concerning the 1/4 mile accuracy, it always showed the MPH quite high but the instruction book said that would happen and explained why but I don't recall the details. The 1/4 times were slightly optomistic but they were very consistant. I ran one in my friend's car at the track. I was in the passenger seat running the g-tech while he drove. It reported ETs slightly more than two 10ths better than the actual ET and the MPH was about 10% too high.

BUT it was very consistant. I would have to think for a measuring tool it would be useful to determine if an upgrade improved your times or not even if you can't claim it's results as accurate to the timing at a real track.

One thing I'll stress: to expect it to be as accurate and consistant as possible, proper set up is paramount. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS AND FOLLOW THEM!

It is a cool toy to play with.

I havent used it for tuning yet, as I just got my chevelle back on the road Saturday. It is a brand new unit, sealed in the factory box. He got a deal from the manufacturer (I think) for 1000+ new gtech pros. I have used it on my crown victoria and it is very repeatable, which is good. I think it will be a great tuning aid, because my butt dyno cant feel the difference between a few tenths of a second.

The reason the MPH is high, compared to the strip is because at the strip, your trap speed is the average of your speeds taken at the last section of the track (the trap) I cant remember how many feet it is. The GTech measures your speed at the very end of the 1/4, so since its not an average, the result is higher than a real 1/4 mile pass.

Does it give any 1/8th mile numbers? If so, I might be interested in one. 1/8th mile is all we have around here.

What about 60ft. times? Is it possible to have time to switch it on as you stage and make an actual pass with it recording?

it doesn't give 60 foot times, but it does give 0-60mph times, which is kind of neat. i find it to be kind of a pain to setup before a run- gotta get the thing level, and the flimsy bracket that sticks to the windshield kind of flops around. fun little toy that i've had since '98, tho.
i kind of want one of the new ones that they claim takes care of all the little things they got wrong with the first one- has more gyroscopes or whatever, so it doesn't need to be level, and computes stuff out to be the same as a dragstrip,i think, if you want. also, i think, allows 0-100-0 testing, which would be kind of fun...

They have a 'new and improved' version out, so I suspect, they are just trying to dump all the old ones. Still, for $60.

Only downside is, you want a 1/4 mile time, you have to run a 1/4 mile. Ladies, I'd rather do that at the track than on public roads. 120 mph on a public road is just plain STUPID AND IRRESPONSIBLE. Hope its only your own nuts that end up 50 yards from where they're supposed to be.

The HP estimator doenst need a full run. I was hoping it would have an 1/8 mile time for tuning.

Gene is correct they have a new model out ....I have a Race Tech meter with dual accellerometers ....very acurate 1/4 mile times ( checked at track against time slips on same run ) so I would suggest what ever brand you buy look for the dual accelerometer version. the original GTech is one accelerometer and very inacurate if you dont ensure it level etc ...... My Race Tech is battery powered and is not sensitive to levelling issues very easy to use and has data logging ..... I suspect the new G-Tech is similar technology but not sure. Great for checking 60' times in a big parking lot ;) and yes Gene mine can do 1/8 mile I have had it for 2 years works on cars, boats I think was 239.00 us made in Britian FWIW

I'd LOVE one to practice short times with , i.e. 60'.

check out this unit, its more money than the standard gtech but $90 less than the gtech competition and has more functions.

http://tazzo.com/tazzo/perf.HTM

it has a stand-alone 60 ft test, so you can just practice launches if you want, or run just the 1/8 mile.

Guys,

I got mine last yesterday and wanted to play with it a little. I was working on my buddy's 67 Camaro so I didn't want to take time to get the Chevelle out. I had to run to the store for some refreshments so I took 5 minutes to get it set up for my pickup and took an HP measurement on the way. My truck is rated at 220HP (anemic) and guess what the GTECH read. 220HP! I was slightly impressed. For $60 it was a bargain. At least I can play with it in the 'Velle and do some tuning.

I would love to have one of the more sophitscated units but my money can be better spent right now.

Troy.

Bill, last time my Gtech crossed the border ( to Chris D'Angelis), they banged me for $35 USD customs. I appreciate the offer, truly, but I'm going to rely on the track's timing setup. Many test-n-tune nights coming up. I'll practice 'live'. Plus, with little experience at the track, I notice a BIG dfference between track surface and street.

It was a pleasure to meet you! Can't wait to see the "retro rocket" when its done! Still think you should get real "retro" and run the kind of gear they used to run in 1970! 373 what, oh, you meant 4.88 didnt you! ;)

Gene, No problem ....BTW crossing the border is no problem , the key is how you describe the unit , country of origin etc etc ... some creativity is in order on these ocassions , we get good at that up here smile.gif

Oh so " Lab test instrument on loan " wasn't the right description. graemlins/clonk.gif

The unit came back over via Ron Cook. It was shipping up to Chris that nailed me.

No worry my friend, now that the hub-bub of the show is gone, I'm limiting my car activities to racing! Lots of racing!

( and yes, I am going to order some beefy Superior axles post haste!)

..thought I'd bring this to the top..
I got a Gtech Pro for $45 delvered to my door, from the mfg. (price is now $49 + shipping)

http://www.saxforte.com/data/gtechpro/How_Do_I_Purchase_/how_do_i_purchase_.html

Comparing my timeslips, the ET looks close (I've run anywhere from 12.99 to 13.54 at the track)and the Gtech has been 12.98-13.34,but the MPH is way off..its registered 117 on the 12.98 run to 108 on the 13.34 run
Plan on trying it at the track. Not a tool for the professional drag racer, but for a clown like me :D its certainly a goof to have around.

I got one as a Christmas present from some friends. It seems to be conservative on horspower readings and you definately have to get on level ground. It is very consistant though, so from that perspective it's a good tool. I haven't tried a 1/4 mi run since , as someone has mentioned, you do have to run a qaurter mile to get a time. not many places I'm willing to do that on the street!!!

I bought one a while back for 39.99 plus shipping, probably same guy Chris got his from. It's kind of fun to play with however I wish it would do 1/8 mile instead of quarter. I don't like to get going that fast on the street. Plus with the measly little 26" QTP's and 4.10's I'm at 5800 in 3rd gear before I knew what happened. I let off and let it coast the rest of the way and it said something like 13.70 at 72mph. It's fun to play with in my truck though. Now I just need to get more tire!!

Dane, going by your post it sounded like you where having fun with it..especially with a 540,but I gueess not..must be some daily driver sled you're trying it out on ;) smile.gif
Luckily nearby, theres a nice 3 mile stretch of highway nearby with no exit or on ramps, and its nice and straight..good enough to try out a few 1/4 mile runs ;)
I'm still goofing on my 12.65/122.4 MPH run
..I think the MPH is off by about 16-17 MPH lol

I tried it in a 94 vette and it was dead on and i tried it in a 3 cylinder geo metro and it was damn close but the mph was a little high. My quarter time in the 5 speed metro 18.78...lol
