: Springs in or out??

OK, it's almost time to put the motor in again. I have the inner springs out on the xe 274, but I am starting to have second thoughts. What do you guys think... In or out?? Keep in mind the reason I had to rebuild after 2 hrs run time, is because of 2 lost lobes.

I am not convinced it was the inner springs were the cause of the failure.I just don't want to go through putting the inners back in with the engine in the car if it is not totally necessary..

Also, what is the best thing for break in lube, the ARP moly lube & EOS ?? Or is there something better?

Sorry for all the questions, but I cant afford to do this all again...

Most people are more paranoid after loosing a few lobes.
Well, which would you rather do? A cam swap or a spring swap?

The Moroso or Proform on the head spring tool makes pulling the spings a lot easier than the simple bar on the rocker stud tool. But they cost a lot more too. Some parts stores rent a screw type compressor though. You can stick rope in a cylinder at TDC to hold the valves shut, but a No Fouler plug adapter from the Help section with a air fitting welded on is a cheap air holder and a lot faster than the rope.

Crane sells some cam lube in a bottle.

I've progressed to the point that I need to pull the inners. Next I'll have to progress to a solid roller so I don't have to swap springs. Just $500 lifters.

I think those springs have 320lbs open presure. You shoudn't need to remove the inners.Everything is easy while on the stand. Now puttin them in while motor is in car=pain in neck. That air hold is a graemlins/angry.gif to hook up while headers are on as well as brake booster

I currently have the XE274 in my car and when I rebuilt the engine I fired it with both inner and outer springs. I would put them back in and make sure the engine is timed right to start on the first turn of the key. Be sure to prelube engine.

Wouldn't consider myself anywhere near a pro mechanic, far from it. Yet with a simple Lisle hand held compressor, a length of ignition wire, a machnists' scribe with a magnet on the end ( to catch and install the locks), and a rubber mallet to ensure they're seated nice, it's almost childs play to do. Very simple, easy, should take less than an hour.

You can say Hail Mary's, or do something to help ensure a good break-in. Which is is going to be?

Well before I even heard about cam break in time and removing outer springs I installed a Comps Cam 305H with triple springs and had no problems. As a matter of fact I fired it up adjusted the valves and rand the dog crap out ouf it. I plan on doing the same thing again with my 286H. LOL I may not the crap out of it to start with this time though.
