My malibu currently has the original 6 cyl. I am going to rebuild a v-8 for it:yes: Will use the stock glide I already have. I want the best possible gas mileage with the sound of the v-8-Probably run headers-what about a good stock 305 with a performer intake and a holley 600 vac sec carb:D

You could do a 305, not sure how it's going to do for gas mileage. Or you could also run a 283, probably a better engine anyways. Oh, and if gas mileage is of concern I'd stay away from Holleys and instead run a Quadrajet, if not a 2bbl carb.

I have an old 283 laying around but its been bored 125 thous. to a 4 inch bore:yes: 302 now:yes:But I'm scared it would run hot for a daily driver:confused:

I'm sure you could score a 283 for next to nothing if not free. But if you have a good cooling system why would your 283 run hot? (sorry not familiar with the 301's you're talking of....)
