I have 1/2 long wheel studs and noticed a set of drums i picked up today are drilled right about 5/8 th . Leaving alittle extra room where it fits over the 1/2 studs . Will this be ok , i assume the rear they came off of had 5/8 studs .

thats a little sloppy , i would maybe go 9/16 @ most . you may eventually shear off studs with that slop. BUT THIS is just my opinion. NEVER actually happened to me.

IMO, it will be fine. The axle hub locates the drum.

what about a torsional load like a hard emergency brake? or a launch from a dead stop ? would that be enough slop to cause it to pop them right off ?

I think you'll be just fine.

I've seen slip on rotors bolt holes slotted so you will be fine!

The studs don't locate the drum nor do they need to keep it from rotating. If your lug nuts are properly torqued there is no way the drum will spin when you hit the brakes. You are good to go with the 5/8" holes.

Oh it can happen. It did to me on my Pro St. 65. I was moving my car in the garage and got out to get the door opener and looked back and there was a lug nut laying on the ground. I picked it up and the scheared off wheel stud was inside it. I checked the torque on the remaining lug nuts and another one broke off. All lugs were loose which I figured allowed the drum to rotate back and forth under acceleration and braking. Luckily the drums were drilled with two bolt pattern sizes. I had to ream the smaller 7/16 bolt holes to 1/2 for a snug fit. The lugs that scheared were Moroso brand 1/2x20x3, not some generic stuff. Lessen learned; I torque the lug nuts after every time I have that car out. That big 31x16.50x15 coming off on the highway would of been a disaster!! Mark
