i dont know if i am the only one with this problem but when i try to look for performance parts or small parts for my car, for some reason 68 is the only year they dont have. for example in original parts group and a few other magazines, they have all these parts for every year but when it comes to mine, just a few.

i went to the pomona car show this past weekend and they had every year chevelle on display there except 68 and 64 but i see the 64's all over the place. are the 68 SS396 really this rare (im talking about the chevelle, not the malibu version or nova)?? also mine has the horseshoe shifter but ive seen a handful of standard 68 chevelles, were they converted or were they originally made that way??

Summit (high perf)
OPG (high perf and resto)
Paddock (resto)
Year One (resto)
Norther Auto Parts (high perf and resto)
Ground Up (resto)
Goodmark (body panels and sheet metal)
etc.....

All of these catalogs list parts for Chevelles including 68-72. You should have no problem at all finding whatever you need for your car, literally. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Well i dont think he really ment just performance parts, most parts will fit its just they arnt listed as 68 for some reason.

Another thing is with small parts like tail light lenses and dash parts, ect. They just dont make they YET.

I did a frame off resto on my '68 a couple of years ago...every part is new, down to body mounts and bolts...
They are out there, you have to look at different vendors.

Good luck.

Check with OPG for one, they have almost everything, even the the little dash pieces.

I like the Muscle Factory in Anahiem California. Lots of good stuff at good prices.

Yup I agree with the rest.... 68 is a bit tricker to find some parts for as many were one year only, but it isn't like you're trying to restore something real obscure. Check the sources listed above... I have used some on my own 68, as well as some junkyards, and swap meets.

ss396.com

That's the website for ground up. I've dealt with them several times and they have always had the parts I needed and shipped them asap. I think you should check them out if you haven't already. I have a '69 but know a person with a '68 who gets parts there, and he never has a problem.

I know what you mean by hard to find parts on the 68. A guy at OPG told me that Chevrolet was on strike that year, and that was part of the problem. Some vendors haven't made replacement parts becuase there weren't as many built as other years. Small things like blower resistors, relays, are hard to find, but can be found. Just have to search all the companies out there. I use Natioanl Parts Depot alot. Ground up and OPG are good sources also.

It's easy to find parts for a 68. Just find a 69-72 and strip it :D . You can always sell what you don't need/use tongue.gif

In all seriousness the 68 SS has always lagged behind in popularity. But because of the pricing going up with the more popular years, 68's are looked at a little more. IMO who cares if other years are more popular, I will always favor the 68's.
Performance parts are easy to find Pretty much a BB chev is a BB chev and parts are interchangable.
Resto parts: about the only thing not still available for a 68 is the chrome arm rest bases. Heck for 68 you can still find a few NOS fenders from a GM dealer.
Lastly if there is something you specificly need place a wanted ad here:

I am sure you will get a response. Good Luck smile.gif

Those are not reproduced, as far as I know.

I have the same problem..The Monte is rarely listed for most performance items. It is just a matter of getting real smart on the compatability with the A-body cars.

I'd agree that only minor trim parts are a little harder to find.

They share so many parts with other years and models, I've never really had a hard time, getting what I've needed.

Taste is a subjective thing.

I personally prefer a 68 to most other years, based solely on looks alone. Second favorite would be 69. (they look an aweful lot like a 68. :D )

Then I like the 65, then the 70, 71, 72, 67, 66, 64 cars, in that order.

And to me all those years are better looking than the competition, except maybe the 70 GS Buick.

As an aside, my 72 is a nicer more original solid car, than my 68, but if I had to sell one, I'd sell the 72. probably.

How about tailight lenses? Anyone seen repros offered yet? Or the marker light bezels w/the SS/396 foil inserts used in the start of the production year? Steering wheel w/the SS/396 emblems? just a few I'm still searching/waiting for...
