Got this air cleaner in mountains of West Va. when I was picking up a OEM cowl hood. Is it a regular std base? Is the chrome top for a L78?

Dean- Which diameter?? :D If you mean the outide of the lid, I think it will probably measure about 14 1/2". Looks like a GM lid for the open element air cleaner, but to be correct, the cowl induction lid would've been black. Looks like a real GM CI base too.

The diameter of the base is 16 1/2" & the lid is 14 3/8". The printing on the lid says - Air Filter Service Instruction
Do Not Wash, Tap or Blow With Air
Replace With AC Type 212 CW
When Pluged Or Visable Worn
--------- NOTICE--------
This Engine Equiped With
POSITIVE CRANKCASE VENTILATION
Check System Every Oil Change

Open element air cleaners were used in a number of hi performance applications like the L-78. Anyway - since those stickers have been readily available for some time there's no way to tell what it came off, suffice it to say it could have been any of a number of engines. The silk screened instructions on the bottom aren't offered on repros (at least not that I've seen) so it looks original, but in rough shape.

I wondered because I have one too.
Mine must be for a big car, the lid measures 15 5/8"

Those closed element air cleaners for Chevelles are getting pretty hard to find so it should bring a bunch on ebay.

Dean,
The pic of my lid says 375 hp. It's hard to see at the angle I took it. Mine is not a closed element and a previous post is probably right that the lid is for an open air cleaner. I guess my question is did L78 motors have open air cleaners?

Yes they did.

What would the L78 lid be worth? What is the standard base worth?

The L78 had an open element air cleaner with the lid you have but had a different base with no snorkel on it. Should be about the same diameter as the lid. I would send you a picture of mine but I am out of town.

The HP sticker could've easily been changed in the past.

Let me ask it this way. I assume I have standard air cleaner base for a 70.
The lid has raised printing on the back which seems to be from GM and could be from any size BB if the decal is not original.. Could I list these separate as NOS?

Warren,this is what you have...
the base is a 70-72 cowl induction. If you buy the flange and rubber seal and you use that lid you have a complete CI air cleaner.
The lid is the typical Chevrolet high performance lid found on L46,L78,LT-1 etc. motors.
Can even possibly be from an L78 as the sticker says.
I have 2 of those laying around myself.Driver quality.Never figured out what they are really worth.
Tape off the bottom of the lid, sandblast, primer than paint and use it with the base for your cowl induction air cleaner :)
