Yea thats bad. But there is quite a bit of differenece sitting outside constantly in Michigan and being in the garage in California. Probably take 500 years to do the same thing.

I believe you could look in any of the major part's suppliers catalogs OPG, Paddock ETC and find all the correct items that you will need ,such as the chrome molding that goes around the bottom edge and obviously the vinyl top itself. It's not cheap though and you will need to either be talented enough to install it or bring it a shop that is capable of doing it. Having said this the rust in the photo would be very extreme as most of these car's (now) are in a garage during inclement weather . My current vinyl top was installed back in 1987 and it has a few small rust "bumps" but nothing at all like the photo. Good luck to you and I agree that they look nice with vinyl .

I was looking at a few prices for you at http://www.opgi.com/product.asp?catmainid=1 and here is what I think you will need : Vinyl top moldings $179.95
Vinyl top 2 door coupe black $100.45

Keep in mind that this does not include shipping and that you will need a competent shop to do this correctly (if you choose not to )and I am guessing it would cost at least $200.00 for their services ? Don't let the rust in the photo sway you if you really want it ...when my original top was taken off it was nothing at all like that not sure really how that one got so bad maybe a tear in the fabric resulted in trapped water under the top ? Hope this helps you a bit .

u will also need the right clips, drill holes and either rivet or screw them on to install the molding . if it didn't come with a top originaly !

You can use a stud welder to install the nails for the clips, but I would only recommend that if the car needs to be painted, otherwise it will ruin the paint. The top itself is actually pretty easy to put on. I did one on a Nova and it took all of about a half hour. All you need to do is line it up where it's suppose to go, and glue down one half at a time working from the center out. Make sure all the window reveal molding is off the car, glass needs to be masked as does the rest of the car so the adhesive doesn't get all over it.

I understand you like it better....but why would anyone ever do that? I don't know why GM ever put vinyl tops on our cars, or any car for that matter. Good luck though, even if I don't like it.

My car was originally a vinyl top car but my brother removed it back in the 80's, welded the holes and ground off the pins. I put it back when I restored it. You will need to locate the chrome and install the studs that the clips attach to. I used the screw in style studs but if I had to do it again I would use a stud welder or drill and rivet. The screws stretched the metal just enough to put slight waves in the upper quarter panel along the chrome. The body shop got it all out but would have been better not to have it there in the first place.
As for why I did it... I like the look of the vinyl and it was original to the car.

A good upholstery shop that deals in automotive work can weld new studs on for the trim pcs. I had it done after replaceing 1/4's on my 70, job cost around $300.00

Maybe not quite 500. This CA car came to me from my Grandmother when it was 34. I think the problem has more to do with the water being trapped under the vinyl top no matter where you live. Driving in the rain or even washing the car is enough to get the rust started. No more vinyl top for me. Email me about the trim pieces if you're interested.
