Some of you will remember my post about a pinging/detonation problem, well, PROBLEM SOLVED! Found a gas station in town that has 95 octane gas, with a tank of that the pinging is gone!!!

So, to celebrate I went to the local 1/8 mile track and made a few passes! :D After a few runs to get the feel for the BFG DRs I made my best pass of 8.57 @ 88.8 mph! All this after driving to and from a show 80 miles away and not doing any tuning other than removing the air filter and lid from the CI air cleaner. I'm still leery of the 3.08, 10 bolt rear so I left the drag radials at 30psi. My 60ft time on that run was also my best of the night at 1.88.

I have no doubt there is more there but I am well pleased with being able to cruise all day long, get 18mpg, and then run a 8.57.

The only other major mod I intend to make is a 12 bolt with 3.73 gears. That should put me right where I want to be!

James, thats a great 60'! Good times!

3.73s will be nice at the track, but, man, Ole Paint seems to be hanging pretty good with little gears, and arent thoise 3.08s great for highway use!

Ole Paint has come a way since those 9s at cb03!

Very cool!

I'd say you put the 10-bolt to the test anyway with that 1.88 60' time. I'm assuming you have a posi in that rear. If so, is it an Eaton?

I hope to be able to run mine at the strip once they give me a company vehicle. I saw a sign for a drag-strip when I passed near Corpus Christi the other day.

BTW, I got rid of my slight pinging problem yesterday by lashing the valves a little tighter. Another benefit of solids. smile.gif

The change to a 3.73 gear shouldn't hurt my highway cruising and mpg very much. on the calculator it's still only gonna be turning about 2400 at 70 with the 700R4.

Chad, the rear is original to the elky and is a stock posi unit.

I am also seriously considering changing to one of Harolds 280/288 cams.

James, I thought you were, what cam are you using? Ah, right, I remember your tranny swap now. 700R4 with 3.73s will ROCK!

I'm using a UD 276/286 hydraulic. I was afraid the 280/288 would kill my drivability. But since others have had good results with it I think I'll upgrade, should cure the pinging problem on 93 octane too.

Very nice times, James. Is it safe to say the drag bug bit you at Chevellabration? :D

James, after driving Chris Corwel's beautiful 70, no way will that cam affect driveability. His car is as smooth as they come. Really a pleasure to drive. Like granny's car until you stand on it!

From what Harold said up on another post of mine, he's 'tweaking' the cams slightly, so the **new** 280/88 will be just as good, if not better.

Soon we'll all be LunatiLunatics 'round here.

Gene,thanks for the compliments graemlins/thumbsup.gif
James, you'll love that cam..I'm pretty happy with it..3.73's and overdrive using this cam in your combo should produce some very, very impressive ET's,awesome drivability, and still get respectable mileage too.

I can attest to that cam. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

I've been trying to get the 12 bolt 3.73 from a guy at work for a while now and we were going to get it from the totaled 69 this weekend but the powers that be at work have scratched that plan, he's scheduled to work! GRRRR !!!!!

I guess I'll hold off on the cam till they're ready at Lunatidyne.

It's not so much that the drag bug bit but I want to have a honest to goodness 12 second "real street" car. Besides, if I can get where I could outrun a friend of mines Ford Ligthning it would be rewarding! :D

Hey James, I had a lightning jump on me coming home from a cruise-in a couple weeks ago. We dragged for about 1/8mi and I only beat him by about 1/2 a car length. He did get a head start of about 1/2 length but I was impressed. My wife was in the car with both kids. They boys loved it the wife wasn't happy. graemlins/angry.gif

Oh well, I enjoyed it and she got over it! I caught her telling some friends of hers about it like it was cool so I know she wasn't too pissed.

Been married to her for nearly 17 years and still can't figure her out. That's probably a bad subject to get started with a bunch of gear-heads.

Nice job with the ride! I have that same CAM in mind when I'm ready to swap.

Troy.

The one I want to outrun belongs to a lifelong friend so it's one of those braggin rights things. Plus he's always had Chevys till he got the Lightning and I'm just hoping to get him back to his roots and in another Chevy!
