: What do you think of this motor?
csmnlm Dec 12th, 07, 7:03 PM in the process of fixing up my chevelle. I saw this motor and was wondering what you guys thought about it?
My car is going to be street driven and drag raced some. I may take it on a few long trips but mostly a cruiser.

It looks like it uses some good parts, but I would still like more detail. I think you will be better off with a reputable engine builder in your area. Much better to deal with someone locally. Those HP/Tq #'s seem a little high and if they really are that, I doubt its that good of a "cruiser motor".
csmnlm Dec 12th, 07, 7:32 PM Thank you Brett!
TS454 Dec 13th, 07, 8:36 PM I honestly dont think 650 horsepower will push a 3500 pound car to sub 6.30 passes so either his horsepower numbers or low or more than likely his CALCULATED et is very low.
Bob West Dec 13th, 07, 10:03 PM The build is very similar to mine, I have the oval racerites with the RPM intake, my cam might be a bit more radical 255/263@.050 on a 108 lsa cuz I do good to get 8-9" of vacuum. Mine went 6.48 in less than "good air" at 3860lbs. I figure mine is pretty close to 650hp.
csmnlm Dec 14th, 07, 11:17 AM How streetable is your combo Bob. I will most likely take my car on a few long trips. I'm goin with 410 in the rear and a Tko 5 speed tranny.
Bob West Dec 14th, 07, 6:24 PM You probably wouldnt want to take mine on a long trip with a .708/.708 lift solid roller, but with a little nicer cam it would be a piece of cake.
Busted Knuckles Dec 14th, 07, 7:03 PM That's an awfully small solid roller - why invite all the possible problems of a solid roller if you're not going to go ahead and put a cam in it? (I had to put that in there for Jim, he calls anything less than 270 duration a "weenie" cam :D) Personally, I wouldn't mess with anything smaller than Bob's, you can get similar performance out of a similar sized hydraulic roller without the headaches. I'd also look at RaceRites, they've proven themselves to be a great head for the size engine you're building. If you ever drop a valve or otherwise screw up a ported iron head, it'll be difficult if not impossible to replace it with an identical piece. With aluminum, it can be repaired and returned to service. If that one is making 650hp, Bob's is probably closer to 700 with his better heads and bigger cam.
I'd find a local builder that you feel comfortable with and plan and build one that suits you perfectly.
Here's a solid roller 505 with a cam similar in duration to Bob's with a bit less lift but bigger heads, I believe it'll handle what you're looking to do:

wildman926 Dec 14th, 07, 8:13 PM I have a Voodoo Solid roller 60234 that was made for street/strip use as you can read it HERE (http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?p=808899&highlight=60234#post808899).
You can read HERE (http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1044074&highlight=60234#post1044074) where "The Man" who designed it, Harold Brookshire, states that in a 9.8-1 ZZ502 with 310 Canfield Heads, it made 654 hp/640 tq.
HERE (http://www.zippyvideos.com/3147333995683516/first_road_test/*shawngilbert) is a video of a member here, Shawn Gilbert, on his initial run with it.
If you want it to be a little tamer, special order it on a 112 lsa.
HERE (http://www.holley.com/60234.asp) is the link to it.
Hope this helps.
00WS6TA Dec 14th, 07, 9:06 PM Chad,
You have the skills, build yourself a nice motor. :)
csmnlm Dec 14th, 07, 10:27 PM I tell you guys I don't trust any of the local builders in my area to do even the machine work thats involved in building a motor like this. Plus I need to have a dicision made by the first of the year on what I'm going with. I may just put my old motor back in even though its a little tamer then what I really want. Thanks for all the input guys.
copoman69 Dec 14th, 07, 11:41 PM bad choice , go with 400 small block, nos, and quick change rear end,,
pdq67 Dec 15th, 07, 12:00 AM What do you want??
Scared to have a local do the machine work??
So therefore buy a standard deck height 571" short block from S-O-M and be done w/ it!!
Add whatever topend and cam you want to run and go!!
I'm figuring 700hp easy w/ just a big soild lifter cam and a good intake and exhaust system combined.

427L88 Dec 15th, 07, 10:40 AM Well, y'all assume its a solid, I'd bet its a hyd roller. Only Isky lobe I see at 244 is an anemic 575 lift. , so, dont assume.
Its a deal for $6500 if its 100%, i.e, some bowl work in the heads, nice backcut valves, precision balance, etc.
pdq67 Dec 15th, 07, 1:39 PM It might be CC's great old 288AR??

GolfisSerious Dec 15th, 07, 2:00 PM I would be careful, there are no provisions that if his motor doesn't put out what he says that you would have recourse... for 6500$ he easily could have fit a decent set of valve covers into the build... if he cheaped there, my question is... what about anywhere else?
if you do it, I would ask for a full detailed list of all components used in the engine you are purchasing... make sure he sends the email through ebay and then you would have some recourse if things weren't as represented.
better yet, look up his past transactions and email one of the past purchasers...

DallasMalibu Dec 15th, 07, 6:35 PM I will share my (positive) experience with this same eBay seller:
This guy built a set of SBC vortec heads for my 383. He machined them, and set them up with some GM LT4 springs I mailed him. He did what he said he would, and the machine-work looked very nice. We actually spent a lot of time on the phone, and I believe he does know what he is talking about, and takes a lot of pride in his work (you will get this from talking to him I think).
Of course, buying a set of heads, and a fully built engine aren't the same thing, but he seems to have 55 happy customers on eBay. If you contact him, I bet he will answer all your questions about the engine, and maybe even offer-up some references.
csmnlm Dec 15th, 07, 8:54 PM Thank you for your input. I was hoping to find some one on here that has delt with this guy before. I have contacted him and am waiting on a response

I called the guy today and asked about the cam. It is a solid roller cam. He did point out that he does have another engine on ebay that runs a hydro cam. It has 620 horsepower.
csmnlm Jan 2nd, 08, 4:30 PM I'm bring this thread back to life I just ordered the motor.
I talked to Mark several times on the phone and an very impressed with what he has to say. He supplied me with 2 references and there numbers. He would not take a check from me until I called and spoke to them.

Just curious.
csmnlm Jan 28th, 08, 6:21 PM Well guys I just got my engine today from Mark. I'm very happy with the results of this transaction so far. I gave him a very tight deadline of 3 weeks to have the motor to me. He was 4 days late. (2 business days)Which to me is not bad. (I gave myself a little flex time) He didn't BS me and let me know right away he was going to be a little late. The motor arrived in a well built shipping box. With dyno sheet. Every thing is real clean and well assembled. Can't wait to here it run!

blazerbob Jan 28th, 08, 11:53 PM Chad, I'm fairly impressed with your Ebay engine and the mentioned parts but would want to know all the parts used. Congrats on your engine purchase. Good luck and please let us know how it runs!

csmnlm Jan 29th, 08, 11:22 AM If you would like more info on this motor go ahead and call Mark. He is a real nice guy and I'm sure will answer your ?
csmnlm Jan 30th, 08, 11:42 PM I talked to Mark today. Let me tell you he spent atleast 20 minutes talking to me on the phone about my motor. He has recieved all the $$$ from me already. He wants me to get the most out of his motor that I can. Let me tell you that finding someone that cares about his work as much as this guy does is unheard of! I work in the car bussiness and most guys don't want to talk to you once they have your $. Mark is the exception!!!! He has shown me that there are a few guys out there that still have great pride in there work. Call him yourself and you be the judge.
Bob West Jan 31st, 08, 7:07 AM I talked to Mark yesterday also, he seems like a genuine guy. I'll be curious as to your results which I'm sure they will be great since its built on a very similar foundation as mine ;) :D

http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd224/csmnlm/P1000528.jpgI wish I had found this forum sooner:confused: I think you will be pleased with your choice. I have the first one of those 505's built. 4 years old now thousands of street miles, and more 1/4 mile passes than I can count. All pushing around a 4900LB brick. Mark is my machinist, and this combination was originally designed to push my daily driven lifted chevy PK into the 11's. You will be shocked at the power this mild combination makes. J
stock48 Feb 5th, 08, 5:27 AM Hear is the rundown on my truck.
-1970 K20 4x4
-6'' lift, 35'' mud tires
-Mikes TH400, 12'' stock TH350 converter, with anti balloon plate.
-Np 205 transfer case, with 4.56 gears.
-17/8 x3'' headers, 3'' hooker arrow chambers.
-Holley 950 HP
-31x14.50 Et streets(at the track), 33'' mud tires on the front.
My engine made 658HP, and 690LBS on Marks dyno. No fresh air carb hat, and the exhaughst was dumping in the room. http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/4020/drarssp5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

SWHEATON Feb 5th, 08, 12:12 PM Read this guys feedback, its all good from the multiple engine buyers(didnt chk feedback for non engine buys) and you can bet that if people were unhappy you would see it in the f/back with motors going for $4k-$6,500+.
I have sold a lot of car parts on ebay and i know there is no way that he could get away from bad feedback if he deserved it by selling junk/or bad motors so this guy looks to be lagit to me.
There is a f/back statement from a buyer thats states the claimed hp rating was verified and met on a dyno after he recieved the motor.
Other people also worte in f/back that their motors ran very well and were impressed with perf.
Not all people are theives in this world on ebay and maybe this guy offers a good motor at a fair price, not cheap but @ fair market value.
Something to think about.

two junkers Feb 5th, 08, 11:34 PM Hello to all from a newbe. I thought it was time for me to put in my two cents worth. Mostly because I am fortunate enough to live in the same city as this engine builder and know more about him than most. This guy (Mark) is a true old school drag racer. He builds everything with care and precision. He spends hours developing parts and part combinations to give his customers the most bang for the buck. If he tells you something will work, IT WILL! If he tells you "it's junk" it is!
I have seen about a dozen of his motors on the dyno. I go and watch anytime I get a chance. Just to hear those motors pull against that dyno and kick its butt is an experiance I enjoy time after time.
In regard to dyno numbers. The last two 505s I saw run both pulled over 680 HP!!!!! No lie, just a fact I witnessed. That's 30 more than Mark told the customer they would do.
If you have any doubts about this guy or his work, don't. He loves to prove people wrong.
Just a note, the local number one finishers in Hot street drag racing and oval track racing both had motors built by Mark.
chevguy65 Feb 17th, 08, 11:18 AM Mark is the man!!!!!!!
What he does is nothing short of genius!
He built my engine and I know for a fact that my 355 puts out exactly what he said it would!
Plus he takes the time to talk to you, he likes it that his engines are track tested.
In fact he was not going to build my small block until I assured him I would race it.
Now that is not only stand up, but a guy that knows his engines stay together and run like he says!!!!!!
I made a carb change and gave it a tune and will post time slips after I go out on March 30th when our track opens for the season.
gspan1830 Feb 17th, 08, 12:51 PM I just LOVE that video....
Its my favorite, i just love how that little Camaro stands up and screams.
mike1231 Feb 22nd, 08, 11:51 PM I honestly dont think 650 horsepower will push a 3500 pound car to sub 6.30 passes so either his horsepower numbers or low or more than likely his CALCULATED et is very low.Still think I use a desk top dyno? Mark
