should the idle solenoid only be enrgized when the a/C is on?? if not, then what is purpose of stepping up idle and when should it be energized?

what is the color wire and source for the idle solenoid??
what is the source of power to the accelerator actuated switch for the cowl solenoid...i presume it is the orange wire and the black/pink feeds the solenoid...is this rite??
is the switch power fed thru a fuse?? if so which one??

I cannot answer all of this , but the AC idle solenoid is hooked directly to the compressor, so it is likely that any tine that the AC is on , the idle solenoid is activated.

The idle solenoid is there to help when shutting off the car. When you turn off the engine, the solenoid lowers the idle so that there is no run-on. If AC, it's used to up the RPM's due to the AC being on.

The color of the wire should be green and it does come from the hot on the compressor clutch.

My 72 has one and it doesn't have AC.

I think it had something to do with them turning the timing up for pollution reasons and the solenoid was used so there was no run on.

In 1970, the "anti-dieseling" solonoid was added to keep the engine from running on when the ignition was shut off. This condition was caused by the "leaning out" of the fuel mixture, higher temperature (195 degree thermostat) and faster idle speed, all designed to lower emissions. The carburetors were redesigned so when the solenoid "de-energized", the throttle plates would close completely preventing "run-on". The idle speed is set by adjusting the solenoid plunger screw.

Forgot to add, ("brain cells dying by the millions!) the "anti-dieseling solenoid" is energized when the ignition switch is "on". There should be a female connector at the firewall near the distributor for it. If not, power it from a source that's only energized when the ignition switch is in the "on" position.

I have a black wire with a red stripe sitting in the wire gutter at the firewall.I guess this is for the solenoid. My car is a 70 454 4 speed and I always thought the stick cars didn"t have the solenoid.
