i have a holley blue pump with regulator on a 454 with a tunnel ram and two edelbrock 1405's. the engine will run a while and then dies out. there is vapors coming out of the carbs which i was told they were flooding past the seats. next time i ran it i waited till it started doing it again and shut the pump down and gave it a few pumps on the pedal to keep it going and it came out of it and ran awile until it needed more gas and i turned the pump back on again.
i have it set at 5psi on the guage that is about 5 inches after the reg. i know the pump should run all the time with the engine running but this pump also runs all the time with the engine off to.
any help would be great. up to any sugestions
thanks chris

The pump runs with the engine off? Do you mean the pump runs ALL THE TIME, or if the engine dies, the pump continues to run until you turn off the key?
If it runs ALL the time, you need to wire it to a switched power source. If it runs after the engine dies, but not when the key is off, you need a three-prong oil pressure switch, and wire the power through it. Pump won't run unless you have oil pressure.
Have you adjusted the idle mix, and set the idle speed properly? Where is the vacuum advance connected? What cam and compression do you have?

the pump is wired with a painless pump kit. i meant that the pump doesnt shut off after it builds pressure with the key on engine off. i have not set timing properly yet. i am still breaking the engine in, running it about 2200 right now. it seems to run between 5-10 mins. before it does it.

mine have always stayed running under that senario.

If you are flooding out and breaking in that engine, check your oil for gas. You don't want to gas wash the cylinders and dilute your oil. you have to figure out if you are flooding out the engine or starving for fuel.

5psi shouldn't over ride the needle and seat. Maybe plum a stock mechanical pump in till the engine is broke in. Consider changing the oil if it's diluted or the cam breakin and piston rings could go bad.

checked the oil and there is no gas in it. i was told a mechanical pump wont push enough fuel that high up and feed 2 carbs. could this be a different problem that looks like the pump?
how long do you guys run your motors for break ins before you fine tune the idle and timing?

That is a bunch of BS about the pump not pushing the fuel that far up. There are plenty of mechanical fuel pumps ut there that will push more volume and pressure than one could use, hence the pressure regulator. I know people that run mechanical pumps with Tunnel rams and 6/71 Supercharger setups with no fuel starvation problems.
