Ok guys, I don't know a whole lot of details on my motor. I have 049 heads and I would assume flat top pistons. I am assuming I have about 8.5 compression? The problem is is that the cam I have is probably too large for the compression and I don't want to get a small cam. What can I do here? Can I do domed pistons or does the whole block have to be cleaned up? Sorry for the lack of knowledge....I am learning. Oh I would like to get around 9.8:1 compresion.

You want to change the pistons? Im learning too ;) If you want different pistons and different compression everything is comin' out, did you not want to pull it? 049's, thats a big block right? Open Chamber Heads I think... ?

You can get new pistons, get a thinner head gasket, new heads, shave the heads down, or cut down the block deck.

Do you know what your compression is? There are some long(er) duration cams that work will with low(er) compression engines.

Casey i honestly don't know exactly. I did get a cranking compression that was low (120) maybe, but I was having starter issues which could be to blame?? Which cams are those that you are speaking of?

My friend recommended milling the heads and a thin head gasket. Also they are 781's...my error.

If you have an old P/U 454 motor with true flat-top pistons you will be around 7.9 to 8.0 to 1 CR.!!!

Easiest way to do this is to get a set of early, closed chambered, large oval heads like -206's or -215's and then use a set of .020" thick, steel shim headghaskets to put you up around 9.0 to 9.25 to 1 or thereabouts with a stock bore 454 motor.

Of course if you bore her, then all you have to do is get the needed pistons for the CR. you want and use your open chambered heads..
