: 1978 Trans Am
WAX-UM Dec 10th, 07, 7:16 PM My Boss has an original unmolested 130,000 mile TA red, automatic, no t-tops, black interior. Its a basic plain 6.6 liter TA. The good part is it runs and drives great and has perfect interior no rust ever. Has original red paint which is very fadded and needs redone. Car is very very original.
I think I can get it for 5,000.
What are they worth In nice driver condition or Local show quality. What are they worth in this condition.
NADA says 30k ??????????? I dont think so.
Philip Dec 10th, 07, 7:22 PM I would give $5k for it. I like the style and the 6.6L engine has lots of power.
TCSS1970 Dec 10th, 07, 9:31 PM Even though it says 6.6 they had 2 different motors. I could be corrected but one was a 400 pontiac and the other 402 olds. I don't know if they were supposed to be the same or not but I had one with the olds and it would wip up pretty good on the pontiacs. It also took care of the stock camaro's to. I liked the car. Mine was gold on gold with t-tops. It only had one problem. It wasn't tree proof. Oh well I walked away. See which motor it has. It said on the label on or near the radiator support. Talk him down to 4 to 4.5 and you should be ok. Cost a fair chunk to get all those decals back on it besides the paint. If you buy it lets see pictures.
ChevelleInTheMaking Dec 10th, 07, 9:34 PM Just a correction. The Smog Versions came with the Oldsmobile 403** Small block.
WAX-UM Dec 10th, 07, 9:44 PM It has the 400 6.6. Im thinking about offering him 3,500 but remember he is my boss/buddy I dont want to lo-ball to much Ha Ha
Im not expecting to steal it but I wouldnt mind getting it having it painted and enjoy it for a year or so and get my money back.
NOTHINBUT69s Dec 10th, 07, 9:52 PM Year one and the crew were out looking for 75-78 T/As for there Burt Reynolds special edition. I'm sure the T/A is worth every bit of that.
JWA Dec 10th, 07, 10:52 PM http://www.2gta.com/1978ta.html :
The other two engines in the line up were essentially carryover for 1978. The automatic only 185 horsepower (RPO L80) 403 cubic inch Oldsmobile engine was back (coded U2, U3, VA, VB ) and still the only engine California and residents living in Government deemed high altitudes could order. The L78 Pontiac 400 was the base engine (coded YA or YU ), but now it's 180 hp could be combined with either an automatic or manual.
For $5k it isn't a bad deal. Market is kind of soft though so I wouldn't expect to get a whole lot more painted unless it was a perfect job.
midshark Dec 11th, 07, 12:47 AM If the body is truly rust-free, it is worth the $5000 hands down, especialy with the 400. Don't pay too much attention to NADA. The values they show this last time around are a result of being infected with Barrett-Jacksonitis.

Correct they came with a 400 Pontiac and a 403 Olds, easiest way I know of to tell is the Olds has the engine oil filler tube up front.
1970SS396&1967 Dec 11th, 07, 2:10 PM Not trying to be negative but my brother had one of those and the gas mileage was horrible.I've always liked that body style and they handle pretty good.
D Stroud Dec 11th, 07, 2:36 PM I'm not sure I would take less than $5000.00 fopr it if it were mine. The 78-81 Z28s and T/As are going up up up for nice examples. It won't be long before it will take upwards of 15K to get into a nice one.
From your discription, you are getting a very nice deal at 5k!
I sold this for $12,250 - 3 years ago!

StrikeNetworks Dec 11th, 07, 2:37 PM Smokey and Bandit..remember that car when i was a kid
72 Custom Elky Dec 11th, 07, 3:43 PM Here is a 77 I had back in 1986 I sold it for $9,500

rak1 Dec 11th, 07, 3:54 PM 5K is more then fair; I saw a nice one in Smokey and the Bandit paint (black/gold) sell for $8500 and it didn't run, but was clean with no rust and had every option. Go for it!!
Keith Tedford Dec 11th, 07, 4:15 PM Don't pay much attention to the hp figure. A cam change, headers, and tuning can get you a respectable performer, and probably decent gas mileage too.
rbwjr325 Dec 11th, 07, 4:48 PM I had a new one in 78. The one with the Pont 6.6 had T.A. 6.6 on the center cover in hood, the olds motor center cover just had 6.6 on it. The Pont motor was much faster and from experience it was indestructable. T tops leaked a littie though,at least the Hurst ones did. Wished I still had that one too.

Actually, this is a myth. There were 400 pontiac equipped cars that had the 6.6 litre decals. The ones that said T/A 6.6 were cars that had the W72 performance package on them. The VIN is the sure way to tell what they had. The 5th character of the VIN, If it is a K, it's a 403. Anyhting else is a 400
davis95 Dec 11th, 07, 11:02 PM 5K sounds like a great deal. If I had an endless supply of money and had a resto shop the TA would be way up on my list to of cars to restore right behind my 66 Chevelle.
WAX-UM Dec 14th, 07, 8:02 PM Although I do like the old TAs their are a few other cars I would rather have, but I couldnt help myself to offer him 4,000. I think it maybe a done deal, he is sleeping on it. Wow my wife is gonna be mad !!!!!!!
If I get it I will put on my list in front of my LS5 and get it done as a decent driver.
vferrizz Dec 15th, 07, 12:03 PM It has the 400 6.6. Im thinking about offering him 3,500 but remember he is my boss/buddy I dont want to lo-ball to much Ha Ha

I believe another way to tell is the hood scoop. If it has a Poncho 400 the scoop will say T/A 400. If it has the Olds 403 it will say 6.6 L. One fun thing about Pontiacs is you can find out all about it if you don't have any documentation. Sent the VIN into PHS (Pontiac Historical Services). For about $35 you can get a microfiche copy of the build sheet, options, AMA specs and even an original window sticker if you want. They kept great records. Wish Chevy did that.
I had a '75 T/A. Red, T-Tops, 455 w/ super T-10. Wish I still had it.
louisianaboy05 Jan 23rd, 09, 6:53 PM Hey this guy has a 78 trans am with a 403 he says the freeze plugs are rusted out and the interior looks pretty bad. He only wants 1000 but Im not sure. I checked the vin and they all matched up and the body doesnt look horrible. Any thoughts?

Does anyone actually READ anymore????
FLASHED Jan 23rd, 09, 11:32 PM If you buy it and repaint it get your new decals from phoenix graphics.they had the best prices when i did mine several years ago.If im not mistaken they are made by 3M as were the originals.Trans ams in decent condition are getting very hard to find. You dont hardly ever see one on yhe streets around here anymore.I would like to sell mine but my wife wont let me.Same with my 55 Bel air ,cant keep them all in good enough condition to drive. It just costs to much to keep them maintained.
ulySSes Jan 24th, 09, 12:02 AM East bound and down, loaded up and truckin'
