: Plate Systems
Viva La Vega Jan 20th, 05, 6:51 PM I have been lurking on this site for a while now and finally decided to register to ask some questions. My first question is about plate systems. I have a mild pump gas small block in a 71 vega. It ran 12.00 @ 111 with a 1.7 60' on the footbrake. This was pretty much just cobbled together with very minimal carb tuning. This winter I bought a carb tuning book and hope to get those issues sorted out. Once the carb is tuned correctly I plan on putting a plate system on it to run a 150 shot. I have been looking at a few plate systems and it seems the only real difference is the lack of a spray bar on the NX kits. They claim this is an improvement over kits with spray bars. I was wondering if anyone had any good or bad experiences with either the NOS kits(spray bars) or the NX kit(no spray bar)? My background knowledge is in honda stuff and recently converted to the dark side of muscle cars. I had decent success with my single nozzle kit on my honda, but this is a whole new animal. Any input is appreciated.

Ron454 Jan 21st, 05, 9:40 PM This isn't the dark side....it's the original side!
I'm not a bottle baby, but if I were, I'd call the manufactures and get the facts. Ok, they will all say their's is the best. But at "only" 150 hp.....I doubt it matters all that much.
BTW......Hondas can go fast, but welcome to RWD racing...the weight transfers to the correct tires.

Viva La Vega Jan 22nd, 05, 7:50 PM Oh hondas can be fast, but im with you on the weight transfer, that is why I switched formulas. RWD+torque+traction=fun.
70SS540 Jan 22nd, 05, 8:59 PM Had a N.O.S Big Shot plate system on a slightly modified pump gas 454 H.O. Worked flawless. Looked like the cylinders were burning evenly by the looks of the plugs. When I sprayed it (275hp), that 454 came alive like you wouldn't believe. When i got off the spray, the motor went back to normal. No backfiring or anything. This was my first experience with nitrous and I was impressed.
Just make sure you have everything set up the way the nitrous kit manufacturer recommends (safety switches, fuel supply, ect.) and you have good lower end parts in that motor!

What kind of manifold were you using with that setup? I want to set mine up with a small shot and was looking at using the NOS Big Shot in case of any future upgrades.
70SS540 Jan 23rd, 05, 9:44 AM The 454 has a Edelbrock Victor Jr. single plane intake. I had a dedicated fuel system for the nitrous. A wide open throttle switch and a fuel psi switch plus a button on the steering wheel to activate the nitrous. A purge valve and bottle heater were some other options I had that were not needed but benificial.
Dont forget colder plugs gapped no more than .035 and timing retard! I had a MSD timing retard module. Good luck!

Viva La Vega Jan 27th, 05, 6:23 PM Good info, thanks guys.
mike1985 Jan 28th, 05, 12:19 PM The only problem with the big shot plate is 200 is the min. HP level. But it's a good plate.
It depends on how much you want to spray. I just recommended a friend to a NX hit man kit. It's adjustable from 100-200. Nice kit , it also uses 5lbs flowing fuel pressure, some other NX kits require 8-10 PSI flowing fuel pressure.
Viva La Vega Jan 29th, 05, 8:30 PM My car has the stock crank and rods(I think) in it so im not gonna go to nuts, but after this thing pops it will be rebuilt pretty stout.
