: Turn Signal Lever Kickback

Did the 66' come with a signal lever return kickback? You know... when you finish a turn the signal lever returns to neutral. I'm not sure if mine ever had this option or more likely, it's just broken.

If it's broken then is it the cam that usually breaks? I'm installing a MOMO steering wheel soon so it would be a good time to look at the steering column assembly.

Thanks for your help!

Slim,
Your '66 did come with a self canceling turn signal switch. It is commom for these to break...could be in the cam; could be the switch itself.
Bad news is there a THREE different switch units offered for a '66 and you can't tell which one you have until you take the steering wheel off and look... unless it's a tilt column.
It may be a "BCP" or a "Guide". If it's a Guide, let me know. I've got a brand new one you can have cheap.

On my 67, it was just the little spring was missing. I was able to find replacements at PepBoys, where they have all of that "Help" stuff hanging. I actually had some pictures in my post, if you can find the thread on here somewhere

I tried to refer to each of you as Bill then I realized you're both Bill. haha

I found the post! http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=191635

Unfortunately, mine looks completely different. I don't have the top two guides on the cam. Bill #1, I probably have one of the other two you mentioned. Will have to see more this wknd.

Mine looks just like this and mine looks unbroken just like this. Now i'm scratching my head trying to figure out exactly what's broken. I'll see if I can find more pics.

After looking at it closer I might have a broken plastic piece that the lever is mounted onto. Mine looks like only half of that. Is that a common part that breaks?

Here's Bill's pic for reference

Another reason I found why my turn signals weren't working. I removed my steering wheel, and when I replaced it, I guess I didn't have it 'pushed down' as tightly as I should have. When I pressed down on it and tightened the nut further, my turn signals once again cancelled

I picked up a new turn signal assembly with the wiring harness at a swap meet a few years ago because it was new and inexpensive. Everything was the same as that in our '69 el Camino, except that the connector was a little narrower than than my old one. Looked identical but when placed side by side, they were different and it wasn't going to plug into the steering column connector. I removed the parts I needed as they were identical to my broken ones. You just never know with GM.

I was able to successfully perform the steering wheel conversion this wknd but still have the broken signal cancel to deal with.

I took some pictures below. It looks like both ends of the turn signal cam are broken? It also looks very different from Bill's picture above.

Pic 36: steering wheel with horn cap removed
Pic 37: retaining nut and wheel removed. "horn contact guide" shown
Pic 39: "horn contact guide" and center spring removed. cam shown

If someone can help me verify if I have broken or missing pieces I would very much appreciate it!

not at my garage so i cant look at mine, but Looks like the same as my 66 from what i can remember. That would be a "BPC" switch and the portion of the switch that is clicked by the cam appears to be broken on the top "right turn" function at least. I think the switch is about $80 to replace. Prolly a good idea to replace it since you are this far, its not difficult to do and mine wore out and even my brake lights were effected

Can't tell by the pic...the major difference between the two types is the way they are mounted to the column. Bolt patterns are different.
Besides...look closely... the switches are marked either "Guide" or "BCP" on the upper face near the shaft bearing.
