anybody see the 9" bolt in housings on ebay for $285? i`m thinking about getting one for my 70 SS since i`m not having any luck finding a decent priced 12 bolt. i got qouted $750 for a 2.73 one legger and another for $600 pretty much the same way. i can get a 9" 3rd member from a friend of mine pretty cheap but i was wondering if anyone here was running one and if they are any good. thanks.

This should maybe be in the Transmission/Driveline section, but no big deal.
I am not running a 9", but that is a rock solid setup for a high HP car. I would do a search on this subject in the Transmission section and see what you come up with. I did a bunch of research on it when I was trying to decide about getting my 12 bolt rebuilt.

One major consideration in this would be the positive axle retention of the Ford housing. You can get these ends welded on a 12 bolt (as I am having done), but the 9 already has them. So, if you're going to do some drag racing this is a great setup for you.

Check some of the internet sites for Currie and Moser and whatnot. You can buy 9" housings from them bare and have your shop do the rest of the work. You can buy them in various other configurations as well, like with the A-body brackets welded on and just needing the guts and axles and brakes or whatever.

I think Currie or Moser even sells 12 bolt housings bare. Maybe? Isn't Currie even in your neck of the woods?

Check those other sites before shelling out ebay cash for something you can't be sure on the quality.

Currie is in southern california I think. I`m in Northern. I did`nt think to put this in the tranny/rearend section. Anyway, the only reason I was thinking of using one is the chevelle I just got doesn`t even have a rearend. A friend is letting me borrow one to move it but I`ll need to find one. I wanted a 12 bolt since I believe this is a LS5 car but I`m not going to pay $600-$700 for a 2.73 one legger. I`ve seen 12 bolt 3.31 posi rears back east for about $600 but I would have to ship it. I`ve looked everywhere for a 12 bolt but can`t find what I`m looking for. I`m not planning on much track use but I will run it down the strip once and a while. Anyway, thanks for the reply. I guess I`ll just keep searching.

Keep looking. Something will turn up eventually.
If you're not set on a 12 bolt it'd be pretty easy to get a 10 bolt almost free until you can find something more suitable.

I've got a 10 bolt sitting here that I can't even GIVE away! Wish I were closer. I'd just let you have it.

I guess what I meant by "in your neck of the woods" is that they're on your coast. I debated getting something from them, but the added time and cost of shipping here to the Midwest nixed that idea. Moser IS in my home state, so even though they are a little more expensive, it pretty much evened things out.

i found a few 10bolts but they won`t hold up to a 454 and a 4spd and i don`t want to pay for something only to have to find a stonger unit later. the only reason i want a 12 bolt is to keep it close to stock. i`m pretty sure it`s the original 454 LS5 and ( at least the engine numbers say it`s a 70` 454 LS5 360hp w/mt)i know it is somewhat of a rare car. i was just think ing of the 9" cuz i can set it up pretty cheap. i can get 3rd members from racer friends and axles are pretty reasonable as well as rear disc brake kits that the same guy is offering. i might just go with the 9" and keep a eye out for a 12 bolt and swap it in later.

Let's see, $285 for the housing, $300 for axles, $60 bearing kit, centersection $?. The nine inch will cost about $700-$900 to build depending on how many budget parts can be found. I've got a 12 bolt with 3 series factory eaton carrier that came with 3.31 gears, sold the gears and bought some richmond 4.10's for it. This is complete, drum to drum. Make me an offer. The last rearend I shipped was about $80 for shipping. I'll be building a nine inch for my car with two sets of gears, so the 12 bolt will be sold. Better it be used in a car where originality is more appreciated, Bob
