: UD 272/272 Solid vs LS-6/L-78 Cam Results
Made my first drive since installing the inner springs today. I don't need a timeslip to tell me the UD cam flat smokes the LS-6/L-78 cam I had in there. Some say you can't tell a .2 or .3 difference in dragstrip times by the seat of your pants (I disagree BTW). Well if that's true the UD/Lunati cam must've picked it up .5 or more 'cause there's no question it has much more power throughout the rpm range. It's advertised as an LS-6 replacement cam and it idles the same. I can't really tell a difference there. But the power difference is there from off idle on up. It has slightly less duration (238 vs 242) @.050 lift and more gross lift (.550 vs .520). Plus it's ground with 112 LSA vs 114 for the LS-6/L-78. No it won't see the dragstrip. My days of waiting in lines all day for 2 or 3 runs are over.
1967chevelless396 Apr 17th, 04, 2:02 PM Hey, Von.
That's the little solid cam I want to use in my winter 489 BBC project (pure street use). I was hoping that someone had some experience with it.
Can you list your combo please?
Thanks, Charles

LOL,,,you must have one heck of a hemorrhoid meter there Von....2 tenths of a second,3 tenths of a second??? aint no way you can tell that  What you can tell is if you spin or not,or if its flat in the middle or on the topend, I've made passes that I would swear that were tenths quicker and they were only .05 quicker, like last night, trying to get back in the 11's with drag radials,,ran 12.13,12.11,12.11, then told myself that I had done it and only ran 12.05...there ain't no way graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Robert, we'll just have to agree to disagree. When I was running Stock Elim, a .20 slower run would feel like I was tied to a tree. it happened once when a rocker adjusting nut backed off. Charles, email me. Yours isn't working.
BB_Mike Apr 17th, 04, 6:02 PM Can't wait to see it run at Chevelle-abration this year. That is, if we do the track outting thing at all. If not, then I'll just have to sover up long enough to drive it!
MadMarv Apr 17th, 04, 9:25 PM I don't know about feeling hp. I supposedly gained 70hp @ 6200 rpm but I used to spin my tires going over sand at 1500rpm at 1/4 throttle. I def. lost a bunch of power pre-2500rpm, so it hard to say..
If I had to ask, I'd say the car felt slower, but if I went to the track, I'd say it would be faster.
I think I made the wrong decision this time, but thats me.
427L88 Apr 18th, 04, 7:29 AM Good news Von. My only critism of the slightly bigger 276/84 is the lope isn't very stealthy. Bit too rumpity-rump for me. Glad to hear you still have something resembling a stock idle and the power of a Brookshire grind.

Glad the cam swap worked out graemlins/thumbsup.gif
von Apr 18th, 04, 11:52 AM Gene, Good thing I didn't go any bigger than the 272 on the exhaust side anyway. With it advanced 5 deg I only have .110 exh valve clearance with the Speed Pro forged pistons. They aren't very generous on valve reliefs. I had the intake side flycut .040 in the past and that's plenty safe now.
