That seal is in the wrong way, if you also look at the tiny slinger grooves in the seal if installed that way it will push oil out the back.

Yikes! Ok, Im glad I posted this then. I thought it went the other way also from the way the little groove looked. But the package said fat side faces the front of the block. "faces" meaning the open part of it is looking that way or its closer to the front. Im dyslexic ;) I'll flip it... Thanks CArl

The lip of the seal should point front towards the bearing. Make sure you do the same for the cap as well!
Phil, without sounding rude, I would suggest you pick up a copy of the book; "How to rebuild your big-block chevy". It is an HP series book and contains about 99% of the answers you have asked in the past few days. Nothing wrong with learning by asking, but what if you have done something wrong, thought it was right and never asked anybody on here to verify?? It would go unchecked and you could have a disaster at fire-up. The book takes you step-by-step on the teardown and rebuild process.
Good for you for wanting to do it yourself, graemlins/thumbsup.gif but a small oversight could cost you major $$$ and time later. Don't take this wrong, just trying to offer some good advise. I used that book years ago on my 1st buildup and it was great.

Phil

which book do you have? "how to rebuild your bbc" or "how to hot rod your bbc".

the how to rebuild book covers the disassembly and assembly process much more thorough than the how to hot rod book.

Like Jim said, the rebuild book covers 99% of your recent questions in depth with pictures. including checking the ring gap and installing the rings.

if you do have this book, check out pages 117-120.

Thats the one. Page 120 was extremely helpful on the gap positions, that was probably the easiest thing so far. These rings are supposedly pre-gapped but its something we should check right? Im going to read more

phil read all of the pages i mentioned, and look at the illustrations carefully. then when your done read it again.

page 118 explains how to check the end gap among other things, like setting the end gap if its necessary.

Then take a look at the top center picture on page #116. And the paragraph on the right side of page 116 that starts with "The lip of the seal....." It answers your question about the mainseal.
