I have a 72 chevelle tilt column with auto on the floor, Trouble is, the shaft is pushed up inside making it impossible to put a bolt in shaft to ragjoint.Does anyone know how to fix this or can i have the column rebuilt? to clarify I'm talking about where the intermediate shaft bolts to the column at the firewall

I wonder if you're having the same problem I encountered. I couldn't get the bolt on the splined end at the column to go through the shaft. I ended up finding out that I would have to grind off 1/8" or so off the end that goes into the spline from the intermediate shaft. The bolt would start but it was obvious it wasn't going to go all the way in. I think there might a slight difference in these shafts or columns from year to year but I'm not sure there.
Get the spline into a position where the divot on the spline is pointed straight up where you can see it. Then mount the intermediate shaft and look to see if what I'm saying is correct. The divot is only half way into the intermediate shaft hole if you follow what I mean. I believe there's not much material there on the shaft to grind off (I think there's only 1/4" from the hole to the end of the shaft !) and it made me nervous until I realized the splines and bolt were never going to come out since it is also attached on the other end !
I think my problem started with columns I had from 2 different Chevelles- one a 71 and the other a 72. I tried to choose the best one and I think that was the root of the problem.
