For my 502 hydraulic flat tappet cam. I saw Comp 812's mentioned as a good quality lifter. I'm trying to avoid using crappy ones but who can tell where these things are made.

Thank you

I like to use GMPP part # 12371044. Never had a problem with them.

I am afraid to use them because I believe that's what's in there now (from the factory) and I can't quiet them down.

is it the quick design of the cam? The comp xtreme cams are known to have a solid lifter sound. A few have had this noise with voodoo cams also. Google reed cams, they will sell you some american made lifters at a decent price. I wasn't sure as I got some no name box of lifters with my shortblock. I was originally going to buy some off him since I didn't trust them. I happened to mention I had some but feared they were chinese. When he saw the pics he was able to tell immediately that I had johnson hi lift lifters and said those were good. Saved me some cash and won me over.

Heck, install solid lifters in her and lash them hot at say, .006" and .008" and go!!

You apparently have the sound, but not the solid lifters!!

is it the quick design of the cam?

No because I believe it is the factory cam and does not have an aggressive idle and makes good vacum.

The noise varies by the way when cruising and has no correlation to temp or oil pressure.

Reed cams, excellent in every way.

I had a Reed Cam here originally intended for the 402 motor. I never ended up using it and went to a smaller Crane hyd. Often sorry I did not use it. They offer a micro polish option on their flat tappets that they claim do not require the extensive break in. The cam I had bought was made with that option. The lifters also came with the extra finish. As I understood it, something designed for circle track guys that held up well and carried over to the street.

The sad truth is there are only a couple of companys making lifter bodies in the world and they are both out of the US. However, some companys do use different internals. When I was building engines, I used alot of the Comp Cams Pro Magnum Flat Hydraulics....at the time they were using a body that had a hard insert in the bottom and the internals were pretty quiet and dependable. The problem is, the availabilty of lifter bodies is so off and on that you never know what your gonna get when you open the box. Hope this helps.

I think Isky's are all american made. Don't quote me on that one though.

Are you saying that the resurrected Johnson/Hylift company makes lifters in the USA, but buys the lifter bodies from someone else who is offshore?

yes...I used to work for a large engine remanufacturer and I got to see all the behind the scenes stufff that most people never see. Same with springs...alot of Valve springs are made by a company called Union Steel. Many of your top cam manufactureres use these springs and put their names on them....its a fact.

Tom,

Not sure, using the stock gauge but it runs in the upper register at hot cruise. Gauge seems reasonably sensitive/accurate.

I can't imagine the pump pickup because it is such a low mile motor.

I am now toying with the idea of re-ringing this motor because it is an absolute pig(a known problem with 502's). The intake runners and valves are so carboned up & full of oil that I don't think I will be happy even with quiet lifters because it smokes a bit. The tail pipes are even greasy. It does run good though!

I just have to mentally resign myself to the extra work.
