Hello guys, i just purchased a 1968 Chevelle SS its a 4spd car with a 396.
I see the last 6 vin an another digit on the front passenger side of the block deck so that means she is matching numbers.
There is another number next to it which is 1032SFD
How do i translate that number? What does it stand for.
Is there any way to see if the transmission is matching numbers also?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am new to Chevelles... the price was too good so I had to jump on it. The vin starts with 13867...
Any one knows the production on the 4spd SS Chevelles. I see the production number on a lot of sites but that is for automatics and 4spds both.
Thanks,
Danny

Welcome Danny...
Sounds like you got that car that ran thru the auction yesterday.. Nice solid car.. And if your asking... it has the matching # motor in it.. the Suffix is ED which is a 325hp 396.. The rest will correspond to your build date.
I am not sure of the Rear or tranny though you will have to get under it and pull all the numbers..
Go to www.chevellestuff.com (http://www.chevellestuff.com) to get all your answers.. Good luck with the car and post some pic's for all to see...

Are you certain about that 1032SFD number on the block pad? It should perhaps read something like TO328ED which would translate to...
TO- Tonawanda, NY assembly plant;
328- March 28, assembly date;
ED- code for a 396/325 block with manual shift.
There should be a partial VIN stamped on the trans as well. A date code too.
Carb should be Rochester Quadrajet # 7028211, with a single snorkel closed element air cleaner.
Don't know the production numbers for the 68 SS396 convertibles with 4-speed, but I know they are highly sought after. It is a convertible, right?
Oh yea.. and from the trim tag #’s I pulled it was an original (Y2) Butternut Yellow car with Black top and with a black BUICK interior from the Factory..
Car was built in 1st week of April 1968
So the dates/numbers Merlin is pointing out is more than likely correct..
Rare car at that….

F1 you are rite.. I bought the Chevelle that was in the auction yesterday. I initially bought it to resell but I think I am keeping her... The code on the engine which is almost next to the Last 6 Vin on the block is " 1032SFD " i just double checked.
The car is not yellow its actually kind of red color rite now. This means it has been repainted to be a different color? i will post a pic tomorrow from the Data Tag on the Cowl.
Thanks guys !
