How do I get the steering column out of my 64 chevelle. There is a clamp that seems to hold the column and two bolts but how does it come out?

Thanks,

Most likely there is 2 bolts with wedges under the dash. Then there is a plate over the firewall opening that is split in half. Loosen the bolts holding the plates together. Under the hood you will need to disconnect it from the rag joint or coupler. There will be some wiring to un hook possibly under the dash. You should seek assistance as they are awkward while removing. I have found removing the front seat simplifies things. I have never removed one from a 64 but this should be close....Good Luck

maybe this picture will help. you need to unbolt the plate which is at the firewall, i think there's about 6 bolts holding it. (the plate is one piece, not two, and there's no way to get it off the column unless you disassemble the entire column while out of the car) this will open up a big hole in the firewall and allow you to pull the column out. i had forgot about the bracket that goes all the way around the column...i think i must have bent it back and squeezed the column out of it, because you can see it is still attached to the dash in the picture, but obviously the column is out!! when i reinstalled my column i did not use this bracket which is why i forgot about it.

Yes, that's what I did. Carefully pry open the 'clamp' and slide the column out of the open part.
