: Quick HELP Please w/ Oil Fitting 454
feedphillipnow Mar 6th, 05, 8:29 PM I found a fitting that works, im installing my copper/brass line for the oil guage. There are 3 ports above my oil filter. 2 small ones and 1 larger one in the center. Can I use any of those? The larger center one is what I have a fitting for. The 3rd opening isnt even blocked off, I should plug it off, yeah?
Thanks...
feedphillipnow Mar 6th, 05, 10:08 PM I think I found out its the first hole, the one thats IMPOSSIBLE to get to. Nothing like 3 hours of zero progress ;)
feedphillipnow Mar 6th, 05, 10:49 PM COOL ITS STRIPPED, The only thing I can think of other than pulling the engine up again, taking the headers and everything back down so I can properly reach this thing is to find a socket that somewhat fits it, its got the little square tip, and glopping in some jb weld letting it sit over night and then try to undo it with a ratchet. This sucks... bad
Bob West Mar 6th, 05, 11:06 PM Right dead center above the filter facing drivers side...in the middle of the 3 holes I think you're looking at.
feedphillipnow Mar 6th, 05, 11:37 PM The larger hole? (that one is right smack middle/ i think) I heard that one wouldnt work well it's too large and the pressure or something may be different? The 3rd hole I think is some kind of clutch linkage and doesnt go all the way through, the first one is what a few people told me was the right one, which I stripped the hell out of and won't budge at all... If I can use the larger one in the center that'd be great, problem solved... but ive heard no a couple times... this nearly ruined my day! I did get other things done though.... so yeah let me know anyone...
Thanks
;)
ak69 Mar 6th, 05, 11:42 PM Phil, use the tapped hole on the front of the block, it's EASY to get to, and a perfect place for your guage. I will sent you a photo in a few minutes. Away from the headers, filter and all the stuff that your fighting with. I am looking forward to you kicking life into this new motor. Dont know what I will do when it's up and running, kind of like a good TV series coming to an end!!!!! graemlins/thumbsup.gif
feedphillipnow Mar 7th, 05, 12:24 AM Haha, thanks Craig, yeah shoot me photos that'd be awesome helpful! I only have a few things to do and the only thing I have to buy tomorrow is a dipstick, and pcv hose. I hope my copper/brass line is long enough to reach the spot your talking about... should be.

Phil, you got mail.............
Bob West Mar 7th, 05, 7:30 AM I have always used the one above the oil filter. On my 4th big block right now and never a problem. Where do you get your info
feedphillipnow Mar 7th, 05, 5:00 PM Robert, what year block do you have? I think only some have the multiple holes above the oil filter. Still the easiest one to reach is the larger hole dead center but I think thats for an oil cooler line which is what this block originally had, not so sure I can use that... My powersteering bracket is in the way off the front port craig told me about, I could easily grind off a corner though. But the fitting plug has what looks like an allen wrench but its squared, what kind of tool gets these off? Also along the lower line along the block where this one craig told me about, there are like 4 or 5 port plugs above the oil pan, on the side/bottom, would any of those work?
feedphillipnow Mar 7th, 05, 8:47 PM Well I shaved down a corner on my power steering bracket to get to this opening, I still cant get the plug out, its got an indented square tip, Im not sure how to get it off. This is the only thing I have to do and it's not having it.... so is it a no go on the larger port above the oil filter? Thats virtually all I can get to.
If the plug is a "four sided hole" try a bare 3/8 Rachet / socket extension, if it's smaller than 3/8, take a cheapo extension to a bench grinder and make it the size that works. :D I have a drawer full of what were regular tools that have been bent, modified, cut down, and bastardised to do things they were never intented to do. You know,...............kinda like building a hot rod
feedphillipnow Mar 7th, 05, 9:05 PM I tried a smaller adapter for a ratchet which fit, I knew it would snap it, it had no chance. I guess I will have to make something...
feedphillipnow Mar 7th, 05, 9:36 PM .... stripped it
Rick Bandy Mar 7th, 05, 9:38 PM I also used the front oil galley hole just behind my power steering,it got the line away from my z-bar and was very easy to route. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
feedphillipnow Mar 8th, 05, 2:09 AM Thats the one I wanted to use but I wasnt sure if it went through, plus I cant get it off :( Bad luck. If I take that plug out will oil poor out? Or does it not work that way. If I ever get it off...
Natural Born Killer Mar 8th, 05, 10:10 AM I use the big hole near the filter, It works fine.
Rick Bandy Mar 8th, 05, 10:22 AM If you pull out the plug you may just get a slight amount of oil(engine off).
feedphillipnow Mar 8th, 05, 3:45 PM Thanks guys, yeah I think I'll just use the big hole, it made read a little differently so Ive heard. But if I put that in I can fire the engine up today, its been 4 long months of buying & building smile.gif I can always change it if it reads funny. Big hole it is....
Phil, That will work fine. If it reads a little higher or lower from a different location it really does not matter. It's just a reference to take note of normal or change from normal. Good luck with the start up. I have crossed fingers, and have spoken directly with the Big Block gods. Check your pre start list twice, fire extinguisher and let it rip!!!!!! Note to all engine builders, good idea to remove and replace all engine block plugs at the start of an engine build. They can be a real pain to deal with later!!!!
