i know that my car is #65 orange flame 1972 ss 454, but i am not sure what the orinial stripe color was for the car. It is an black interiro, and therfore it has a black stripe, but the previous owner i talked to said that it was originally a white stripe/black interior. Is there anyway to make sure what the color of the stripe is, i HAVE the build sheet but it says nothing about the color of teh stripe. I prefer black, what it is now, but i may want to paint it white if i want to do a rotisserie resto. some time in the future. am puzzled.

The car could have been ordered with either no stripes which was standard, unless cowl induction, code ZL2, was ordered, or either white or black stripes with that color.

I don't think the stripe color was on the trim tag, so first you would want to see option D88 on the build sheet to make sure the car actually had stripes to begin with.

my car is an ls5 WITHOUT the cowl induction option, no zl2

O.k that means the D88 stripes were an option on your car.

So do you see a D88 code on your buildsheet? If not, then your car originally was not built with stripes.

i will check and reupdate, my build sheet is very old and only a few (the imporant) options are really there (Ls5, ss454 pkg, and m22), but i will recheck for the D88 option. is there any other way to know for sure, if can't find it on the build sheet (since it's in bad condition?) thank you very much mike.

Alek, not positive for the 72 year but for 1970, block 44 shows the paint color. In your case it would show 65 65 or 65 A or 65 B. These are 3 different examples.

After the 65 65, there is a letter. The letter will indicate the stripe color.

An example would be 65 65 B. This would indicate orange lower and orange upper and black stripes.

The interior had no bearing on what the stripe color would be. Only the top color did.

In 1971-72 you had to chose what color you wanted when you ordered the car, black or white except when black or white vinyl or painted roof was ordered. Then only certain color stripe could be had with the roof color.

For instance, red car, white roof (paint or vinyl) got white stripes as default. Black not available, there was a specific chart that spelled out the color clashes.

All I have is a 1970 Color chart but you can see the interior has nothing to do with it.

what is the YF8 option? To answer this question honestly, I DON'T KNOW ... but it appears to be, the color option on the D88 stripes.
Does your buildsheet list option, YF8 ????? .... If so, what color does it show ????

ok so i looked on that block and it says 65 B XX, not sure what that means, any help? does the B mean black stripes? and whats the xx mean?
The would mean black stripes, "if it's listed in the 3rd column"/or/ black vinyl top color, "if it's listed in the 2nd column"
The [XX] should mean "nothing".

Looking at box 79, of this 1972 buildsheet, it shows [ color ] under that is [ LW - UP - ST - W ]
[b]I believe, if your's has a stripe color, there should be [3] items listed, plus the [XX] in the 4th column.
" it should read something like this " ..... [53] [53] [XX]
1st column) [53 = lower body color]...
2nd column) [53 = upper body color]....
3rd column) [B = stripe color]...
4th column) [XX = "possibly the wheel color"]......

[b]Alek,
Does your, box 79 buildsheet "layout", look like this (3) column one, with a "LONE DOT/or/DASH" under the [ST] column ?????......Don.

If your car is "solid ORANGE", with no vinyl top ........
I think you're right, if the "DOT is under the upper body color" ..... then the "B" must mean, black stripes .....

Where was your car assembled ???
baltimore, maryland.

Alek,..... The reason I ask where your car was assembled, is ......

Speaking about 1970-1972 Kansas/Leeds built cars "ONLY" ............
The single "[L]", the "[L B]" and the "[L W]" coded trim tags "that I have seen", have ALL been on Super Sport bodies, built at Kansas/Leeds plant, during 1970-1972.
The earliest dual coded trim tag, that I have seen, is [04B-1970].
I believe these codes, started after mid-year, I have never seen the, "L B" and "L W", Chevelle trim tag code prior to, "early springtime, 1970"......

The "L" coded Chevelle's, were "ALL" Super Sport cars................................"that I have seen" ........
The "L B" coded Chevelle's, were Super Sports with "BLACK", D88 stripes......."that I have seen" .....
The "L W" coded Chevelle's, were Super Sports with "WHITE", D88 stripes......"that I have seen" .....
I have seen two (2) other Leeds cowl tags from documented SS cars that had not only an 'L' but also a 'B' or a 'W'.
The one with the 'B' had a build sheet that proved black D88 stripes,
The one with 'W' had a build sheet that proved white D88 stripes.
Both cars were built February of 1970 or after. I wish I had taken pics of the tags and build sheets to show here.

Contrary to popular belief, the interior color has no bearing on the exterior color stripe. As seen from the chart, it the top color.
