: A simple shower = common cold.
Chris R Dec 3rd, 07, 9:21 PM Last Thursday I worked my usual shift and came home, took a shower just like I usually do like any other typical workday. I was feeling fine all day until I finished my shower. I noticed right away before I was even finished drying off that I started getting a slight bit of a sore throat.
As the night went on, my throat got worse. I was taking Halls drops less then an hour after I showered and even went as far as to take some Vitamin C to help my immune system cause I just knew. By the time I went to bed I was taking Alka Seltzer to help my throat.
Friday morning comes along and I was not feeling well at all. Throat stopped hurting but I was all stuffed up and it was obvious this was a typical common cold. I have been nursing it all weekend and now I have the usual cough and it feels like needles every time I cough. Not to mention I have been feeling like I just have no energy.:(
My question is. How can a simple shower make me go from feeling just fine to a common cold? It wasnt like to room was chily when I got out or in. Mom called yesterday and she says it was probably from the steam you breathed in and helped release toxins in your body that gave you the cold.
I personally agree with that too but was really wondering of any other opinions out there?
hoffbug Dec 3rd, 07, 9:23 PM Its going around Chris..
LeoP Dec 3rd, 07, 10:08 PM I had that too, doc called it a sinus infection, gave me an antibiotic to take.
70isfine Dec 3rd, 07, 10:16 PM Kind of like when sunburn doesn't show up until after a shower? After reading your post i decided not to shower tonight.
webfoot Dec 3rd, 07, 10:23 PM I have the same effect with some of the programming my wife watches on TV.
RickH Dec 3rd, 07, 10:44 PM The over-the-counter medicines will get you over it in seven days, or you can do nothing and be over it in a week.
camarofreak Dec 3rd, 07, 10:57 PM wasnt the shower that caused it, but more than likely it opened up your sinuses etc. and the affects of whatever you had were more noticable.
like the old wives tale about going out side with a wet head will cause you to get a cold or flu NOT TRUE.
Phil Keller Dec 3rd, 07, 11:03 PM Who were you showering with?

Typhoid Mary ;)
Buzzbomb Dec 3rd, 07, 11:06 PM LIke Camarofreak said, cold doesn't cause a cold; germs cause colds..Somewhere along the line, you must have touched something and exposed yourself to it with your hands..Bottom line, do like Mom used to tell you: WASH your hands and keep 'em away from your face..I actually find a nice shower to HELP if I have a cold. I really get hit hard with the nasal problems, and for some reason, the steam or whatever gives some relief. Its not practical to take multiple showers during the day, but when I have the chance if I have a cold it sure helps for awhile.
camarofreak Dec 3rd, 07, 11:18 PM some things to remember
1 when flu season hits drink bottled beer not drafts (they dont sterilize the glasses)
2 wash your hands more often when handleing things at work or school (lots of others with germs caughin sneezin in there hands)
3 never share food or drinks with friends or family (the wife hates me for this one) they may be sick but dont know it yet!!
4 a shot of whiskey can help (sterlizes the mouth throat etc.) alot of whiskey breaks down the immune system
5 did i mention my mom was a nurse for 22 yrs LOL
webfoot Dec 4th, 07, 1:06 AM Wow, I never thought of drinking bottled beer rather than drafts. Too bad whiskey and coke doesn't come out of a tap.
gary salsman Dec 4th, 07, 10:25 AM I'm not sure about the steralizing of the glasses, but all bars have 3 sinks. Wash/rinse/sanitize. The third sink has a small amount of bleach. If the bartender has a cold, touching the glass may infect it, but they touch the bottle too. I like to think the alcohol kills the germs.

rak1 Dec 4th, 07, 11:39 AM I hope your feeling better soon...
Wooderson Dec 4th, 07, 2:35 PM Some bars do not clean the glasses at all, depending on who is working. No more glasses for me.
Astro Vent Dec 4th, 07, 2:40 PM wow so taking a shower and going outside is not harmful huh? My mom always told me never to do that and i believed it. huh.

Yes it is....if its a cold shower and then you walk outside into 30 deg temps naked and hang out You wont get positive attention from the ladies either.
Cold temps doesnt do anything but cause frostbite and hypothermia....and also sucks if you stick your tongue to a pole but we're all aware of that thanks to a triple dog dare in a certain movie. :D
Astro Vent Dec 4th, 07, 2:55 PM true,true.

Not every bar is the most sanitary and its not the bartender you have to worry about but the guy that was using that glass before that was hacking and coughing then putting his mouth on it. havent you ever gotten a glass in a bar or resturant and noticed lipstick on it!!?? It can happen.
Buzzbomb Dec 4th, 07, 5:15 PM havent you ever gotten a glass in a bar or resturant and noticed lipstick on it!!?? It can happen.
YES! I had this happen one time, and that lip stick was so fresh, I couldn't believe it. I asked the waitress if she was kidding by bringing me that glass. It clearly was never washed. I make it a point NOT to criticize the waitress or waiter until AFTER they bring me my food (lol, for obvious reasons ;) ) but that time was an exception. Man, who would have thought that bars and restaurants do that sort of crap....No more glasses for me either.
Beaux Dec 4th, 07, 5:19 PM lipstick will tend to stay even if they wash since it doesnt like to come off unless its wiped....any divorced man can explain this in full :D
Dipping in 3 different bins of liquid aint gonna remove it. Have your wife kiss your chevelle window and then dump a little water over it. Heck, push your face against a glass and then dip it into soap, water and then light bleach water and your face mark will still be there. They dont wash bar glasses, they rinse em. I dont care what kind of rinse they're giving em. It it aint in a parts washer that stuff aint coming off clean.

Yeah, but the symptoms won't be as bad. Nothing like doing an intake job with a runny nose.
joeyv69ragtop Dec 5th, 07, 3:49 PM cold affects your immune system. Cold does not cause a cold, but it makes you more succeptible to the cold virus and other germs.
