Hey Guys,
I have what is probably a rookie problem,
I started my new BB yesterday graemlins/hurray.gif it fired right up, the guy who built it said"set the total timing @ 34* @3000rpm" I did. Then after, I tried to set the idle speed (I noticed the vac gauge bouncing from 5 to 10 very rapidly)and fuel dripping from the main jets(this I attributed to low vac as the metering rods would be up).
I checked for a vac leak and found none, today I changed carbs with similar results,I can't get the vac stable but fuel isn't leaking from the jets
Does anyone have any ideas of which way to go on this??? Thanks in advance,
Andy

Still sounds like a vacuum leak with the bouncing gauge. Does the engine idle?

tight valve?

Ok the first thing we need to know is what the initial timing is with the vacuum advanced unpluged and capped, you said total is 34@3000, is the engine smoking at all, have you checked the adjustment of the valves.Just because the total is at 34* doesn't mean there is enough initial timing to get it to idle smooth. If there is any smoke out of the exhaust it could have a vacuum leak from the lifter valley. If the valves are adjusted to tight this can effect the idle and cause inconsistent idle which will give unsteady vacuum readings. graemlins/waving.gif

Guys,
The initial is 10*,no smoke from tailpipes.
I didn't want to get into the valves as they were supposed to be adjusted by a pro, but it seems that's the next step. I'll keep updating the progress. Thanks for the help.
Andy
No it won't idle at less than 1300 or so.

I can tell you now with the comp. you have and the cam you have that that 10* initial is not enough, but you may get away with it if you run your vacuum advance to manifold vacuum, this will pull in more timing at idle.If you don't wont to go that route you will need 16* to 18* initial to get it to idle right.

JR and all that replied,
It's running.. graemlins/hurray.gif Jr,I did bump my initial to 16* which pushed my total up but it doesn't seem to mind.
The culprit in this case was the guide plates, the
throat wasn't deep enough for the pushrod to travel thru and it was bottoming out(Crower SS enduro rockers)When I went to check the lash I found one guide broken, swapped them out for GM's
and checked them out. car idles and actually pulls a vacuum. Thanks again guys !!!
