: Spool for the street
19Nova72 Mar 22nd, 04, 12:14 PM Is it possible to have a daily driver and a spool? I know when you go around turns the inside tire is turning slower then the outside so one or both of them have to slip to be even. What is a spool like in the rain? Thanks
Dragn70 Mar 22nd, 04, 12:20 PM Some posis can be tricky in the rain so I would not want to try and drive a spool on wet streets. Why are you thinking about a spool for the street? If its for your 9", a mini spool is cheap but can be a pain on the street.
Patrick O'Rourke Mar 22nd, 04, 12:30 PM I have a mini spool in my beast, It's a cheap alternative for me at the moment. I have not driven it much, but I don't care for it. Straight is fine, corners are like you said, it feels like it's binding up bad, makes me think something is wrong till it's straight again, then it feels like someone just gave the car a good push. As long as you go straight your fine. As soon as i am able I will be getting rid of the spool or just get another rearend altogether. Carefullness will definetly be a necessity!
ZZ69chevelle Mar 22nd, 04, 12:38 PM Unless your car is race only, don't do it. Especially if you plan on driving in the rain. Go with a good posi and you'll get the same marks on the pavement. ;) My 12 bolt came with a spool, and it went right into the "extra parts" pile.
mr 4 speed Mar 22nd, 04, 2:45 PM Get a Powetrax/Richmond locker

Anthony Mar 22nd, 04, 8:26 PM my 72 ihad in highschool had a spool, hooked up nicely but went through tires like crazy. if its all you can afford do what ya gotta do but id say save a little for a locker instead, at least you wont tear your tires up so bad.
Mike Feudo Mar 22nd, 04, 9:54 PM Don't even think about it. If you break an axle (they put a severe strain on axles when you go around a corner) it could be your last drive. Depending on which axle you dreak you will make a hard turn.
novaman Mar 23rd, 04, 11:38 AM I am currently using a mini spool and regret my decision of getting one instead of a locker or posi. Was trying to save some bucks. For the track its great but on the street its a nuisance. Squeels and binds around corners. And as Mike Feudo said, it will heavily tax the axles as well as the studs. Get a posi if you plan to do any driving on the street.
What spline is your 9 inch? If it is a 28 spline you could find a an open third member for a couple hundred bucks and save the spool for the track. With the rain around here I wouldn't run a spool on the street. Heck even on the dry days I wouldn't run one on the street. A set or 2 of rear tires and you have paid for an extra third member or a track-loc smile.gif
InsuranceGuy Mar 23rd, 04, 1:54 PM For the street, get a good posi.
I HAD a Detroit Locker in my Camaro and it was slightly better then a spool. When making
turns it clicks and chirps the tires...annoying. Requires constant tire pressure inspection. At the track it works like a spool but a lot heavier and not near as strong....I broke one of the side gears and it sheared the splines off my MOSER axle. I would be very afraid to drive with a locker around turns on a rainy day. For limited street and drag-race use.
I HAVE a spool in my Chevelle. Locked rear, very difficult to make turns, eats tire voraciously, puts extreme strain on axles, requires absolute committment to constant tire inspection as to equalized pressure and tire rollout. For minimal street and drag-race use.
