While looking through some posts from 2003, I ran across the one where you recommended using the Speed Pro 817R hydraulic lifters on a sbc. Did I understand correctly that you set lash to .002" ? Do you set this as you would a solid lifter cam ? Since some time has passed since you wrote that about the 817R lifters, do you still use & recommend them ? I am unable to find these lifters. Do you have any ideas where I can find them ? Thanks. Dave Hamilton

Yes, you can set them with between .000 and .002" lash or you can run them with preload just like a standard lifter. You can read about them at Speed Pro's site (http://www.federal-mogul.com/cda/content/front/0,2194,2442_897063_6939,00.html). They call them Hi-Rev lifters. 817's (standard lifter) and 817R's are Chevy lifters. They work great. Today I missed a shift and went to 7500 rpm (I usually shift at 7000). No pump up and no problems. I got mine at a local rebuilder. I'd think you could get them from any Speed Pro dealer. They might have to order them.

Thanks for the help Pat. I've found em in a couple of different catalogs and should have no trouble getting my hands on some.

I guess I don't understand running hy- lifters so tight/Loose(??) they become solid lifters after popping a retainer out of one of them in my 406!!

I guess that's why I like solids so much b/c I don't have to worry about pump-up at all.. But the springs better be good ones b/c a short stroke SB can wrap up above 7,000/7,500/8,000 rpm easy!!

The "R" lifters have a heavy duty retainer and are designed to run with lash. In effect they are solid lifters. I know a bunch of guys running them to 7000+ with no problems.
