: building a 454 for 4x4

hi all

I am planning to build a 454 BBC for my truck
it is a 1986 shortbed ( 4900 lbs ) and it has
14BFF rear-end + 10-bolt front-end ( ratio is 3.73 )
SM465 4-speed + NP205 TC
33" tires

I use it mainly in the dunes and sometimes I love to play in the mud :D

I am planning to build a 454 for it and I have some questions

this is what i am thinking in
9-9.25:1 CR
Edelbrock 750 CFM 1407 carb + MSD 6AL ( have them already )
Hooker Headers
Edelbrock Performer Intake
Voodoo 60202 cam + springs
i will reuse the original crank + rods ( with ARP bolts )

But, since I am from Saudi Arabia it is almost impossible to find large oval heads here except for some GM rectangle port heads from used marine engines and from what I know rectangle heads aren't meant for low-to-med range torque

so are normal peanut port heads OK in my situation?
and is there a noticeable difference between stock valves and bigger valves (without porting) ?
how much should I expect HP/Torque from this combo ?
and do you suggest another cam for this application? 60203? others ?

thanks

Ahmed

I am amazed that you found a truck and a 454 ! And where would one use a marine engine in the desert? Is Safwa near the gulf?

Those heads provide very good low end torque but are limited in RPM's due to the small intake runner size. I have never played in the dunes but if'n you dont constantly rev at/over 5000 rpm then the peanut ports might work okay. It will get soft after 4500rpm or so. Just something to consider.

Where do you play in the mud in KSA ?

I would not go any higher on the gearing.

if you don't know
in Jeddah ( west of Saudi Arabia ) we have a drag racing and autocross circuit
http://www.jeddahraceway.com.sa/

and they are about to finish another one in Riyadh ( the Capital )
in addition, many cars from the eastern province participate in drag racings in Bahrain Raceway

and yes Safwa is in the Eastern Side and it is directly next to the Gulf
and we have some mud near the coast

most of the marine engines were used by military and coast gourd boats and they are mericruser 454 with about 400-450 hp in stock form

regarding the engine
is 60202 appropriate for this usage ?
and does it worth to put large valves on these heads ?

thanks
