Or anyone that cares to throw me a suggestion here.

'81 GMC Sierra shortwheel base, 2-wheel drive pickup.

350/383cid (haven't decided yet, due to budget)
700R-4 tranny with B&M shift kit
non-lockup stock converter
power brakes
3.08 gears
28" tall tires

650cfm Holley square-bore carb

We want to go with Vortec heads (1.94/1.50 valves) and a Performer RPM intake. While I'd like a powerband for his truck to be from idle-5500, I'm choosing the RPM intake in case he decides to upgrade later. I don't think it'll be a combo-killer vs. the Performer intake.

Anyway, looking for some big torque that won't run out of breath at 3500. Vacuum for the power brakes, but a pretty noticeable idle. Any other specs needed?

We're looking to keep CR at 9.25 or so. I'd prefer him to be able to run mid-grade gas if possible. He's never had anything real fast, but I want to be able to hear it and feel it. He's payin' for it. ;) Thanks guys!

I like the xe274h or the lunati bracket master II .480 lift. both cams had my sons truck in the mid 13's with a th350 and 3.73s'.

Hmmm??

3.08 gears and a 28" tall tire...

Go with a good old CC 268HE cam, imho...

OR even their 260HE!!!!!

I say this b/c you are down in the two's, effectively gear-wise, imho.. Unless the 3.07, or whatever first gear is, in the 700 will make up for it??? But I kinda doubt it b/c the shift ta second will cut her down again, bigtime??

pdq67, yes, the 700R-4 has a 3.06 First gear. I can speak from experience and say that it makes a nice difference on launch. As far as the fall off from the 1-2 shift...if you have a nice broad powerband you won't notice it. Or at least I don't.

I was looking at the 268 Comp Cam. It might fit the bill. I don't think I could go much higher than that, Robert, those 3.08's are gonna kill him. Boy, I wish I could get him to step up his gear.

Wait a minute. I just did some math. If I'm right, a 700R-4 with a 3.08 gear is dead equivalent to a 350TH with 3.73's. Or at least in 1st gear takeoff it would be. Hmmmm. Am I right on that?

yeah...it woud aunch ok...but off cruise performance would suffer with the xe274

UDHarold has recommended the 272H12 when the Comp 268H fit the bill. Harold designed the 268H and he's said that the UD272H12 was designed to "whup" the comp across the RPM range.

Whether the 268 fits your needs or not, I do not know.

272H12= .454/.454 217/217 112LSA,106ICL looks similar on paper to the 268HE.

Lunati 301A5LUN.

Bigjimzll, I see you're in Redding. My wife has family in that area. Several of her relatives live in Burney. I've been up there once. Beautiful country.

I may be looking at that Harold/Lunati grind. BTW, is it an asymmetrical grind? I've always wanted to hear one of those.

He says all(most?) of the cams he designed after the 268HE(including the 268HE) are asymmetrical.
