: converter options and your opinions
300hp Jan 2nd, 04, 12:07 AM k guys i only want to spend about 450 on a converter. i want about 3500-3800 stall. so heres what i was looking at: ati streetmaster $450, tras specialties on ebay for about $400 or a torco which i ive heard good things about at prestage for like $300. what would you choose and why? this will be in a 3300 lb chevelle with 355 or 383 w/373 gears with about a 125 hp shot.
Bob West Jan 2nd, 04, 7:41 AM Along with ATI,Coan,Continental,PTC,BTE...no experience with Torco,,,but I've had good luck with B&M converters too.
blaauboer Jan 2nd, 04, 7:51 AM Trans Specialties you can buy new in the mid to upper $400.....Go with a 10 inch med stall will flash to 3800-4000 in a small block.....Good luck.
Chris_69_SS Jan 2nd, 04, 9:11 AM I just got a 9.5" BTE from Transman for 405 delivered. It should stall at 4500.
I would think he could set you up with the appropriate 10" for less.
p.s. the BTE piece has anti ballooning plates included and looks liek a really nice piece!
Chris
Oldani Motorsports Jan 2nd, 04, 8:00 PM Thanks Chris, have you mounted the 14 x 32 studded snows yet to see how it works???
If you did not live in the Great White North it would have only been $375; you should have just smuggled it across the border, lol! graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Oldani Motorsports Jan 3rd, 04, 8:18 AM Oh my! Maybe a combo of chains and screws through the tires as well. Be sure to put a hook on each end of the car so you can pull it off the bottom of the lake in the spring after the ice all melts! Nice looking car, nasty looking weather... :D
godsend Jan 3rd, 04, 8:28 AM I bought a A1 10" for around 899$
Nice piece ;)
300hp Jan 3rd, 04, 8:41 PM i was thinking of ger as the crappy one. never heard of bte
Oldani Motorsports Jan 4th, 04, 9:09 AM BTE is owned by Bill Taylor; thus the 'BTE' for Bill Taylor Enterprises. He first started and owned TCI many years ago and then sold it back in the 80's to Equion, who in turn sold it to Federal Mogul, Fel Pro, and now it is owned by a group that also owns Comp Cams. Bill had a non-compete clause in his sale contract, so he had to stay away from the trans business for some time after he sold TCI. He started up Memphis Performance Warehouse almost immediately after the sale and then after the clause ran out he formed BTE and got back into the trans and converter business. It is a growing company, but still very personal and homespun to deal with. Bill's grandson Brandon is their sales and marketing manager, it truly is a family deal. I have sold quite a few BTE race and street converters and only had one negative experience which was quickly resolved. It seems they accidently installed an undersized sprag race into an 8" converter I sold to a friend, and it would not flash up to where it should have. One phone call later they were building another new converter and shipping it directly to my friend in Minnesota so he could still race that coming weekend. All he had to do was just send the incorrect one back in to them with a call tag. That is what I call taking care of a customer. Ditto for my experiences with TCI and JW. For more info on BTE, you can go to my site and look on the 'links' page to get to their site, which is going through a rework. If anyone here has any questions on BTE, feel free to ask, or I can send you to the person who will know if I do not!
