I've got one of his "jetboat" cams in my Corvair. Broke in fine, and it has GOOD torque.

Pick up a hot rod magazine from the 50s or 60s and you'll see Howards Cams advertised and run. Don't know if its same company owners/managers...
My $0.02

I have heard of them, I dont know if they are good or not but if its a roller {hyd or solid} they all {crane,comp,lunati etc} buy the cores from crane,engine power or camshaft machine. Crane cams cores are gold rollers, engine power is black and camshaft machine is natural color {like a greyish}

Howards Cams have been around since the fifties. About the only difference between them and the others is the amount of advertising done.

Same name, different owners.

More-or-less the same company as Competition Products.

I'm running a Howard's hydraulic roller in my 496 and it has been great so far...very strong torque and pulls well to 6k rpm. This has been my first experience with them. Here are the cam specs:

Howard’s Cam - #120265

Max Torque - 2800/6200
Lift -.620/.620
Duration -294/302
Duration at .050 - 236/242
LSA - 112

I had one in my big block pickup motor. I liked it but it only lasted 6000 miles. Typical of a performance flat tapet cam. I wouldn't be afraid to get another but it would have to be a roller. I will never buy anything but a roller again.

Johnny O on here used quite a few Howards Cams with nothing but praise for them. I have spoke to the guys from Competition Products on the phone a couple times and IMO I feel a lot better speaking to people selling me parts who are not just reading descritions from a computer and application charts....most/many of the people at Competition Products are car enthusiasts themselves and race thier cars.

so all I'm hearing is good things about them and their products..........so why have I never heard of them? Ok, so I am not a experienced veteran with this stuff but it just seems strange that I've never heard of them. At this point though, I am leaning towards buying my roller cam kit and accessories from them. their price is lower and they actually answer the phone and talk to you , and all their products and labor is made in USA. sounds like a win/win to me. :hurray:

Perhaps because they do mostly circle track stuff, and limit their budget for advertising to magazines catering to that venue.

There is absolutely no reason a flat tappet cam shouldn't last a WHOLE lot longer than that. If broken in properly and maintained properly it should last the life of the engine.

Howards is a reputable company, their product is good and their machine shop get's it right. They are in the same building as competition products and are a great alternative to jegs and summit. I have never had a problem with their customer service.

Agreed. According to the Cam Master himself UD Harold...many of his cam designs he personally know of them going over 100K on street driven cars, and racer with multiple seasons on them.

*****Again like others have said, they have been around a long time and primarily advertsied in the racing community, but in pleaces like magazines etc.

***Only worry I would have is on thier lifters. Not saying they are bad, but in todays day with so many lifter failures Id want to speak with an expereinced engine builder who has used them with success.

That is true but if you read this forum much a bad flat tappet cam is a very common topic. Also notice I said performance flat tappet cam. Stock will last much longer because they don't have aggressive lobes. This was my second flat tappet, first lasted 2 miles. This cam was broke in properly and oil was changed every 2000 miles. Plus it is getting hard to find an oil now that will work with flat tappets.

I ran one in the 1960's in a chev fuel dragster, was state of the art at the time. I have to assume Howard Johannson is long gone

Ryan, you do realize that Rich is a moderator with almost 10,000 posts, I think he reads the forum from time to time. He is also knowlegdable and helpful when it comes to all things Chevelle. Not sure if you meant it that way, but your post sounded kind of snotty.

Lee, I have a hydraulic ft cam from Howard's, as well as a solid ft, and two solid rollers. They are all top quality, good as any I have used from anywhere else. The price is also much better, because of the low overhead compared to the 'big' guys. When you call, ask for Scott,( he usually answers the phone) John Steele is one of the guys to talk to if you want to really get into the details, he's more on the design end, and he also does the machine work. Customer service is great, as are the prices. They also build lots of engines in their shop, so they have real experience with that end also. John

Howard cams was a thriving company back in the day with the likes of Herbert, Isky,
Engle. But as years went by I think Madden took it over for awhile and got his designs.
Contary to popular belief Howard was not his last name. As time went on the Howard
cams was purchased In name only and rekindled in Wis. I don't think any of the current
cams are of a new origin. I do not know where they are being designed. That is not to say they don't have good cams. But as a man told me just subtract the @.050 # from the .020 # that tells you alot about the cam. The lower the # usualy the more power.
Then call UDHAROLD. olddog
