: Grudge Match! RESULTS with video!
Purs Sep 17th, 04, 11:10 AM OK, the time has come. I'm meeting one of my buddies at the track tomorrow for our "Grudge Match." He's got a '70 Nova with a pretty mean smallblock that's run around 7.90 at our 1/8th mile track. Tomorrow will be my first trip down the track with my new mill. Anybody want to make a guess on what it'll run?
Here's my combo:
461 BBC 10.25/1 SCR compression (7.9 DCR)
closed chambered ovals 2.19's & 1.88's, mildly ported, unshrouded valves, etc...
Isky Z-33 Solid Flat Tappet Cam .560/.560 250@50
Scorpion Roller Rockers
Edelbrock RPM intake port matched to the heads
HVH Supersucker 1" carb spacer
Holley 750DP (thanks Scott!)
K&N 4" Air Filter
Goodmark 2.5" Cowl Hood
GM HEI with MSD 6AL
Aluminum Radiator with Electric Fans
Hooker Headers 2" primaries (I know, I'd be better off with 1 7/8"...)
H pipe equipped 3" Flowmaster exhaust dumped in front of the differential
Turbo 350 with a 3500 Stall and Trans Go Shift Kit
12 bolt with 3.73 Posi
325/50/15 BFG Drag Radials (28" tall)
Curb weight 3530.lbs (3700.lbs with me in it)
Altitude here is 1750, but I don't what the DA is...
What do you guys think it'll do? Can I take him or is it gonna be a sad day for the Chevelle? I'll report back tomorrow night with results and maybe some video.
Bob West Sep 17th, 04, 11:51 AM Its gonna be a good race,he's probably got the weight advantage, but i'm guessing you can run those numbers. graemlins/thumbsup.gif goodluck.
supersport396_2000 Sep 17th, 04, 3:52 PM He's gonna getya,you'll spin too much.
Rmchevelle Sep 17th, 04, 4:57 PM I think you could run mid 7's if you hook! Can't wait to hear your actual numbers. smile.gif
72nova502 Sep 17th, 04, 5:16 PM I THINK YOU SHOULD TAKE HIM, I PREDICT 7.60'S.
Motor Martyr Sep 17th, 04, 5:27 PM Beg or Barrow a set of Hoosier Slicks, CO7 compound 28x10.5"
Looks good to me, although being that its your first day out, you'll have a lot of things uncertain to you that might mess up the ET, or their could be a bog that you didnt know about until it hooks!
Cool down the water to 140 degrees for the pass.
....leave as soon as the 3rd yellow flashes!
Purs Sep 17th, 04, 5:55 PM Thanks for the replies! I think I'll be able to hook, our track is usually prepped pretty well. I do have a set of 26x8" ET Drags that I would probably ET faster with but he's running some QT DOT tire with tread so I'll run my DR's to keep it fair. Tomorrow is mostly about two friends that have been talking smack having a good time. I'll put the slicks on when I start tuning and go for max ET.
Keep'em coming, somebody here is going to have braggin' rights on predicting the ET!
ak69 Sep 17th, 04, 6:05 PM It's gonna be a toss up on less than slicks, with a good sixty foot time I am gonna guess 7.70's. If you hook it's all over for him!!!! Reaction time will tell the tale!!!! Dont be a scerd of the DEVIL'S EYEBALL!!!!!! Tree that sucker, then tell him how fast you would go if your car weighed the same as his
if you can't hook it on a 325/50 drag radial, you've got serious suspension probs. with what you have and at that weight, i would think it should be capable of 7.40's maybe even 7.30's. shouldn't even be much of a race, IMO. but since it's the first time out for the combo, you might find some tuning problems or some other gremlins. good luck!
Purs Sep 18th, 04, 10:46 PM Results: (My first pass was my fastest)
Weather was about 90 degrees and a 15-20mph cross headwind.
RT: .54
60ft: 1.84
330ft: 5.20
1/8th: 7.99
MPH: 88.50
My buddy ran 8.08 @ 82MPH (He's got 4.88's and a Power Glide) I beat him everytime we ran but we both got about .02 slower each run and lost about 1/2MPH.... weather? Also my tranny is about toast. I'm a little disappointed but I think there's a good 1/2 second or more to be found in my tranny problem and tuning.
This video (http://admin.esc14.net/webs/bpursley/upload/movie_0001.wmv) is from the 2nd or 3rd run (I got tree'ed! .52 to .57) but I came from behind and won! graemlins/thumbsup.gif
71chevy0192 Sep 18th, 04, 10:56 PM Badass! Nice win. I bet he was thinking "come on baby just a little more and we have him". I hate to loose by just a hair. I raced a buddy of mine at the track before....1/4, not 1/8, and was just a hair behind him. I think I lost by .04 or some rediculously short time. lol Damn mustangs!! It's nice to see someone post a video that works. Do you ever run 1/4? If so what do you run? j/w
-Ben
Rmchevelle Sep 18th, 04, 11:12 PM Thanks for the video. Cool Chevelle! smile.gif I remember your pics over in the wheel/tire forum with the new Drag Radials. They look awesome and it seems they did OK at the track. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Your buddy's Nova looks pretty hot. Do you have any other pics of it? What's he got in it? How about some video of your car idling? I'm curious about how that Z-33 sounds. Am I asking too many questions? :D :D
Rod
Purs Sep 18th, 04, 11:37 PM Rmchevelle, no other pics of his Nova, but it's a nice car. He's running a high revving 355. The DR's were pretty consistent, all 60ft's were between 1.84-1.86... I've got a sound clip somewhere of the car at idle. I really like the way it sounds.
I was pretty happy with my R/T's, especially for my 1st trip to the track this year.
Run 1: .54
Run 2: .57
Run 3: .44 (Red Light!)
Run 4: .56
Can someone break down my incrementals/MPH and tell me what kind of potential I've got? I know that a 1.84 60ft time is nothing to brag about... graemlins/sad.gif but what about the MPH, etc...?
ak69 Sep 18th, 04, 11:48 PM Looks like a good time, and my 7.70's not too bad a guess? Big fun for sure!!!! That's pretty decent, would be better with some cooler temps, good job at the tree. Sounds like the tires were hooking good for you. graemlins/beers.gif
LXS Sep 18th, 04, 11:51 PM Now that's racing!!! graemlins/thumbsup.gif Not none of this lining up with hondas and crap. Very sweeeeeeet ride and great to hear two V8s hauling a$$!!!! :D graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Rmchevelle Sep 19th, 04, 12:02 AM Watched the video a few times. Is it an optical illusion or does the car slide to the pass. side a touch? That would account for some 60'.
Purs Sep 19th, 04, 12:23 AM here's the one I red lighted on...
Another Video (http://admin.esc14.net/webs/bpursley/upload/movie_0002.wmv)
RM- I don't think I was sliding, I just wasn't driving very straight.... graemlins/clonk.gif

Was your friends 60ft around a 1.70? His 8.0 might be a high 12.9 @ 103
kjett Sep 19th, 04, 1:29 AM Cool videos and nice times! Congrats! graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Purs Sep 19th, 04, 9:20 AM his best 60ft was 1.74 Was his 60ft better because his car weighed less or he had 4.88's or higher stall? (or the combo of all 3?) I'm building a 12 bolt with 4.10's, should that improve my 60ft?
blaauboer Sep 19th, 04, 9:45 AM Very nice.....Looks like you guy's had some fun...... graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Darracq Sep 19th, 04, 10:47 AM nice runs. know 2 tenths off that 60 foot and your looking goood. The cam is a little big but i beat it sounds good.
asbill71 Sep 19th, 04, 11:05 AM Hey small world, I am from Abilene. I saw you at the track yesterday. I have the 67 Elky (white with orange stripes). I came out to run the Car Club Challange.
I tried my hand at the Gamblers race. I could not win to save my life, just one of those days.
Your car looks great, are you gonna run the Ironman race next weekend? Sucks that cruise night is the same weekend a Ironman.
Purs Sep 19th, 04, 3:56 PM asbill, thanks! I saw your Elky too, it was cool. What did you run? I didn't get to stay as long as I would have liked. Did you see me get dusted by that dragster? I tried leaving a little harder and spun.... graemlins/clonk.gif I've still got the '66 model 12 bolt just waitin' for you... :D
sxty9shovel Sep 19th, 04, 8:39 PM one question on the nova what the crap was that right as he was passing the camera if its his 2nd gear it is hella visious it was if his tires was up in smoke when it hit 2nd......
asbill71 Sep 19th, 04, 10:48 PM Purs, I have been debating on what to build motor wise, so thats the holdup on making a decision on the rear. I have a 454 in the Garage. Just needs to be rebuilt. I currently have the 355 in my elky. I am on the fence about stroking the SB or building the BB. Cost is gonna be close between the 2. SB I have lots of parts already, weight (especially for 1/8th mile) and my 8.2 rear might last a little longer. BB I can make lots of torque without being to radical, but will need to change radiator, front springs (weak already) and 12 bolt would be in my immediate future.
I ran a best of 8.94 sat night. I have a blast with it right now. I would like to go a little faster but still like driving around town and would be happy with 8.0-8.20 and drivable.
I will hopefully fall to one side of the BB vs SB fence and will let you know.
are you gonna race in the Ironman this weekend? I figured why not so I will be there.
Purs Sep 19th, 04, 11:11 PM I'd like to race but my wife's birthday is Sunday.... enough said? Just FYI, I've got the 408BB and radiator that I pulled from my car that ran mid 8's sittin' in my garage that I'd make a super deal on....
