: Bed shopping tempur-pedic?
Hot66ss Nov 26th, 07, 11:11 PM Hey guys was looking for some opinions here. I've been getting some back and shoulder pain (side sleeper) and decided it might be time to consider retiring my 13 year old Serta pillow top. I went and laid on one of these tempu-pedic beds, feels good but its hard to say if they will help my pain without sleeping on one for a night or two. I am having a hard time considering spending 3 grand on one of these bed, I've heard costco has a foam bed that's supposed to be great for only a grand. Anyone here have a foam bed and care to share there shopping and sleeping experience.
Thanks
OrrieG Nov 26th, 07, 11:17 PM I got a memory foam overlay for my existing bed and love it. Next new mattress will be a tempur-pedic or similar. I'm a side sleeper and it got rid of all the arms going to sleep and back pain.
bigskycountry Nov 26th, 07, 11:20 PM I own one of the sleep number beds, helped backpain for a couple of years, then the bed began to settle in, and break down in materials. The pains have returned, and so has the pain in my checking account every time I price a new one. They are not a cure all, but it did help for awhile.
BULKSSNEPH Nov 26th, 07, 11:32 PM HI, I had a sleep numer bed seemed better than the reg. mattress (but it was still horrible). Then I got a generic foam mattress, I will never go back to any other bed. It has broken down a little now but still a heck of a lot better than the sleep number beds or coils. My next one is going to be a genuine tempurpedic hoefully it will last longer than the generic one. I am disabled due to a back injury and have constant back pain every single day and this bed has helped more than any other mattress. But every person is different. It helped for me. I hope this helps give you more info for your decision.

Augustboy2009 Nov 27th, 07, 12:49 AM I have a queen foam bed. Its a generic temperpedic bed. It works pretty good! The first couple nights were different but after getting used to it I sleep a lot better. I paid about $450 for mine off Ebay. I first caught on to the idea while searching the walmart website. I noticed that if you get a generic one they aren't all that expensive. I started looking around on all of the websites and Ebay seemed to have the cheapest ones available. I also liked the fact that on ebay you can read the buyers comments/reviews on the bed they purchased from the particular seller.
70isfine Nov 27th, 07, 12:51 AM Try one of the tempur pedic pillows. That should give you an idea if you would like the bed. I have the pillow and i use it on and off.I dont think i would like the bed. Had a sleep number and it was great for a while but after a few years it became painful for me. Now i have a pillow top simmons beautyrest.
Hughski Nov 27th, 07, 1:20 AM Its sort of funny the way matresses are viewed and the amounts we will (or won't) spend on them.
You figure approximately a third of your life is spent ON one to rest up and be well the for other two thirds that is spent OFF of it. Good sleep = good day. It drives me nuts when I can't get comfortable some nights, toss and turn, and feel it the next day.
I've got 10 years on my current one and when its time to change I'll be looking at a better quality one. At the time of purchase, this set was ~$850, which was sort of pricey for me at the time.
jpete Nov 27th, 07, 6:14 AM For those with the sleep number bed, how can it "breakdown"?
I've had one for about a year now and when I thought it was becoming uncomfortable, I adjusted it. Isn't that the point? My dad and a friend at work both have had them for 10 years of more and mine is significantly better that theirs. They still both swear by them and are the reason I bought mine.
And mine isn't even top of the line, you can really get some nice Select Comfort beds.
PaPa Johns 77 Nov 27th, 07, 11:13 AM Spent years sleeping on a 4 inch thick matress in truck sleepers and on the ground. I could sleep most anywhere on most anything. Same is true now after I take a couple of V's before bed.
ChaosEnvy Nov 27th, 07, 1:08 PM I think I posted about this on here before.. but here it goes again.
#1 stay away from Pillow top mattresses, its just a gimick. They add nothing extra. They wear out faster and body impressions show up much quicker as well. Memory Foam is good, but in moderation. A 1 1/2 conveluted layer on in your mattress is good. For a solid core, look for a solid latex core, this stuff is comfy, I tell you what. I made my bed custom, and it goes something like this....
660 Spring Frame. Center and edge support strips, Edge Guards, Corner Guards. Then on each side I have a layer of NTF pad, 1" of latex, 1 1/2 Inch of memory foam, 1 inch a foam, and then another layer of 3/8 foam. Them my mattress cover is another 2 - 2 1/2 inches. In total my matress is amount 18" tall and I think i did too well of a job, you lay down and you just don't want to get out of bed.
Now as far as foam beds go, I'd say latex is a great option, they are heavy though.
Regular foam core mattresses aren't nothing to write home about.
A solid core memory would just not be comfortable from my experience. I little memory foam is good, but you still want some springy fluffiness to your bed.
An option would be a Regular foam core mattress with 2" high density foam glued to the bottom, and some memory foam glued to the top, wrapped with a regular bed cover. This will give you a 1-sided No flip mattress that is firm, giving, and has just enough memory foam for you to be comfortable.

Mike Feudo Nov 27th, 07, 6:04 PM Spent $1800.00 on one this year it probably won't make the move to Oregon with the rest of our stuff.
LateNight72 Nov 27th, 07, 7:44 PM I got to sleep on a friend's tempur-pedic (LONG story, not going to explain, but keep your mind out of the gutter). I am rather large guy (6'4" 290lbs) with a messed up lower back, bad knees, and a getting back neck.
Anyhow, It was the most painful night and day after. I was extremly sore and was very stiff. It was hard to get comfortable in, I tossed and turn the whole night. It was also very hot. Even with a 3" thick mattress pad, a few layers of sheets, it was still hot on the "down" side..

Kevin R Nov 27th, 07, 7:51 PM We have the costco foam mattress and my wife and I like it alot.I work construction and have a bad back and also a side sleeper.I like mine,I wouldnt spend the money on the tempure bed.
36kase Nov 28th, 07, 1:55 PM Bought a generic foam mattress 20 years ago and it felt good for a few months. I then had some kind of flu and sweated for a couple of nights after which I always felt cold in it for a couple months. One day I turned it over and you wouldn't believe the water retention underneath along with the amount of mold. Seems like water doesnt evaporate well out of foam. Never again.
Alan Nov 28th, 07, 3:58 PM My fiance's mom bought her this Aireloom bed 10 years ago:
http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=273379&CategoryID=30764
The price is a shocker (fiance's mom paid $1800 for the set in 1998), but it's by far the best night's sleep I've ever had. The fiance's grandma has had her Aireloom for 20 years and it's still in great shape. The highest price I've ever paid for a mattress set was $400. They only lasted four years before they were too uncomfortable to sleep on. I guess the more you spend for a mattress set, the longer is lasts and the better sleep you get?? Seems to be the case with this Aireloom mattress set.

Good god! Reg. $9,089.00
I'd buy a BB, procharger, intercooler.....and a cot from the army surplus store. Drink enough and the cot will feel like a fancy bed :D
dude, clean it up and auction it off at their sales price and get your car painted. lol

The description sounds just like the bed I describe I made myself. latex, memory foam.. Thick Top.... :) Glad I worked for the mattress factory and got my King Size with frame and box springs, for less than $400.00 Talk about mark-up :)

Only a fool would pay the reg. price though :p . $4,500, minus 20% right now would bring it closer to $3600. I hear ya though man, crazy expensive. If I gotta spend $3600 + tax on this bed in the future I'll be ticked! I'd rather fix my boat and sleep on the bow of the boat.

What's mark-up on these mattresses anyway? Gotta be like 500%+? Sort of like a diamond.
I'm a tight-wade when it comes to mattresses, but just saying it's very comfortable.
Beaux Nov 28th, 07, 4:27 PM Looks comfortable, Alan. Score on that one.
My bed sucks. Dont know what I paid but it werent cheap and it sucks. I get a better night sleep on the aerobed (inflatable mattress) than the crappy bed I have. It was made for back support and apparently that means its only good for people that sleep on their backs all the time. I sleep on my side but didnt realize the bed with back support meant that if you dont sleep on your back all the time that it would equate to torture.
John D Nov 29th, 07, 6:44 PM We've (wife & I) have been on a Tempurpedic for about 2 years now, after retiring our traditional queen box-spring & mattress.
Pro's:
Movement between persons isn't "transferred" so much (you can roll/move without bouncing the other).
IMO it does support you better. It does "mold/contour" itself to your laying position without pressure spots. I do find I'm waking up with less back & shoulder stiffness.
Cons:
So far only one...The darn thing is HOT. It doesn't dissipate body heat like a traditional mattress (Into the air-space under the padding I'll assume). You'll find you need less blankets. (Wife loves it... she's a heat-leech/reptile, I'm usually too warm).
jpete Nov 29th, 07, 6:50 PM Just to illustrate my situation with the Select Comfort.
My "Sleep Number" is a 50 (on a 0-100 scale) the wife is around 20. How can ANY other mattress accomodate two people who are that far apart in comfort levels?
It looks and feels like any other mattress, it's just adjustable to the sleeper.

Well, the one shown above someone is very proud of because it is way overpriced. The mark-up is crazy though. I got a deal on mine becasue I built it myself, did it on my own time and because I was resourceful. When we would build a special size bed, like a 35 X 84 inch sleeper for a diesel cabin and it was a special order for a layer of latex. We would have to use a queen size piece of latex. The rest went in the compacter. I saved it. Put it together and made a king size peice. Latex is expensive and I save a good $100.00 by doing that. Of course I threw a couple extra things in the bed they weren't aware of, but wth.
I think it was said before, people spend a lot of time in bed, for sleeping and then some. Spend a little money so you wake up feeling good in the morning and go to bed without having to shift and squirm for hours.

We used to make custom matresses where one half was made firm and the other half was made softer. The whole thing is covered in the same cover so you can tell unless you lay on it that one side is different from the other. Just to clarify I am refering to the left and right side of the bed, not a difference between the top and bottom.
Big D....
P.S. I'm so glad I don't work there anymore, but am thankful for the knowledge.
