: Do you ever get the feeling we're becoming extinct?
Burnsamatic Nov 26th, 07, 11:13 AM I remember years ago when I backed my car out of the garage people would drive by and blow the horn or give me the thumbs up. Or a neighbor would come out and talk cars for awhile.
Now people walk by and don't give it a second look. Probably becuase they just consider it an old car or have no interest.
It kills me to be out in one of my '69 Camaros and someone yells "Is that a '67 or '68? What the heck? If you have to question the year of a '69 Camaro then you know they have no clue.
Burnsamatic Nov 26th, 07, 11:16 AM I also had a '70 Dodge Challenger R/T from high school on and I would be a rich man if I had a dollar for everytime someone called it a Charger. I would also get the "Is that a '68 or '69?" question on that car also.
Aaron Nov 26th, 07, 11:19 AM I agree 100%
bulb122 Nov 26th, 07, 11:35 AM I don't think it's quite that bad.... I'm not so sure I could tell a 68 from a 69 camaro. Chevelle, yes! :D
At the woodward cruise, there's no shortage of old cars. My buddy followed me in his 500hp 95 Camaro. He was a little bummed out that my Chevelle which badly needs paint drew all the looks. He told me that NO one looked in his direction, they were checking out my beat up chevelle..... so you could be right, there aren't as many people interested in old cars as there once was, but there are still plenty of people that like them! And as time goes by, and less of these cars are out there regularly, it's harder for people to know the differences year to year, unless you grew up with them. Late 60;s camaros are before my time, and I've never known anybody that had one. That's why I can't readily tell them apart. JMHO :)
ChaosEnvy Nov 26th, 07, 11:40 AM My car with its rust and leaking header gasket get more thumbs ups, "what's in it", and "Want to sell," then I can handle sometimes. If they aren't sure what it is, that is fine.. the point it they take notice and like it and attempt to have a conversation. I like camaros and other cars, but I am by far not an expert. I can clearly discern Camaro from a Firebird, and a Charger, from a barracuda, but I don't have all the years don't pat. Still, I like them, and admire them just the same.
Big D
Burnsamatic Nov 26th, 07, 12:09 PM I'm not an expert on being able to tell all years either but the '69 Camaro was a one year only body style(actually a year and a half) and the Dodge Challenger didn't come out until 1970.
68bye Nov 26th, 07, 12:22 PM My Dad grew up in the sixties, well, he was in his twenties in the sixties and owned all the muscle cars he wanted to own. We had books and movies all the time when I was growing up, and he would quiz me on the differant years and models. The ones that still trip me up are 64-66 Corvettes and 67-68 R/S camaros with the hid-a-way headlights. The SS's or standard Camaros are easy to tell apart. The 67 has round parking lights, and the 68 has rectangle parking lights in the grill. Just FYI. I miss the days when you could indentify the year, make and model of a car at night, from 200 yards by the shape and spacing of the lights.
webfoot Nov 26th, 07, 12:34 PM I'm another one that doesn't know the diff between any 1st gen camaros. I just call 'em "60's camaros". Never really got into them or studied them too much.
I get all kinds of thumbs up around here.
68KMENO Nov 26th, 07, 12:43 PM everyone likes the cars of their youth ........ how many of US can tell the years on a model T ???? :)
seems my frame of reference is from 55 to 73 as these are the ones a LUSTED for when I was younger
Derek69SS Nov 26th, 07, 1:21 PM how many of US can tell the years on a model T ???? :) I can. ;)

no, not so...
these cars are 40+ years old...
not everyone.. can break down the year/model/make/big block/small block/ss/rs/gt/ect etc.
by looking at it...
can you do it to a 51 chevy over a 52?
a model t // and blast off the correct year..
maybe you can. maybe you can't..
in the 80's you still saw 69 camaros on the road ALL THE TIME same with a bodys/impalas ss/goats/f bodys/etc
now you see them . on w-ends// fair weather only......
makes a BIG DIFFERENCE
believe it or not.. people have better things to try to remember , than if a first gen f body is a 67/68/69...
Mr69 Nov 26th, 07, 1:47 PM It kills me to be out in one of my '69 Camaros and someone yells "Is that a '67 or '68? What the heck?
You're doing it all wrong.
Here's what I do sometimes.
I tell them "yes, that is right! How did you know? You must be a car guy too!"
Then they'll say something else about the car and I'll say "yep, you're right". If they ramble more I say, "oh yeah, uh huh, yep!"
Makes them feel good.
Easier to make a friend with a little sugar, if you know what I mean.
I'd never expect these guys who make these comments at gas stations to know what I'm really driving. So I just agree with them. It makes them feel good. I mean, why argue? To what end? You'll probably never see them again anyway.
You'll never believe how many come up to me and say is that a 72? (it's a 69, btw). I just say, yeah, well a 69. same thing.;)
Burnsamatic Nov 26th, 07, 2:26 PM I don't know it all but I don't pretend to know it all. If you don't know, don't wing it and say stuff like "Yeah it's either the flux capacitor or the piston return spring is stuck."
busterwivell Nov 26th, 07, 3:58 PM I wish I was getting that kind of question............I get "are you the original owner?"
Ricks70ss Nov 26th, 07, 4:04 PM hey Mike: I still get that. People stop and say something about the Chevelle. I still get the thumbs up. from truck drivers. Kids on school bus. At the gas station. Even a cop rolled down his window & said nice car. gave me a thumbs up as he beat me off the line. ha ha ha. I wasn't going to try & catch him either. ha ha ha
1970SS502 Nov 26th, 07, 4:48 PM I wish I was getting that kind of question............I get "are you the original owner?"
Now that's funny...
00WS6TA Nov 26th, 07, 4:55 PM I always get a  As far as the year, I could care less if someone doesn't know the year of my, which happens more then not. :)
kmchugh Nov 26th, 07, 5:11 PM I always get a  As far as the year, I could care less if someone doesn't know the year of my, which happens more then not. :)
You don't think that big old blower sticking out of the hood has anything to do with that do you Dan? :)
ulySSes Nov 26th, 07, 6:10 PM I always get a thumbs up, taps of the horn and people asking me about it at stop lights. People love it, but most importantly, I do too.
The one moment I'll remember for a long time is one night I was sitting at a red light when this fancy new red BMW pulls right up next to me. He had a couple more car lengths to pull forward, but didn't. I look and his 3 little boys have their faces up against the glass looking looking back and forth at my car. The dad gave me a thumbs up, I gave it back and he drove away.
That was a neat feeling. I think it's because I did the same when I was their age. Hell I still do it when I see a car I like.:D
Burnsamatic Nov 26th, 07, 6:11 PM I wish I was getting that kind of question............I get "are you the original owner?"
I get that also. I was 6 years old when my cars where built!
jpete Nov 26th, 07, 6:12 PM My dad knew every year, make, and model for darn near every 50's car. I do OK on "Big 3" cars from the 60's and 70's. And since I started driving in the late 80's, I can pick out most of them too. They are more difficult because they hardly changed anything for 3 year cycles.
But, it's the same all over, when my daily driver was a Passat, I used to get "What year Jetta is that?" That would be like asking a Chevelle guy what year Vega he had.

Atleast they haven't asked what year 'Stang  idiots
chevelledude71 Nov 26th, 07, 7:17 PM Everytime I drive my Chevelle I get a thumbs up, head nod, a "what year is that", a "I had one JUST LIKE it in high school" and "do you take that too the track?"
I love the attention it brings and I love the comments from the smart and sometimes not so knowledgeable car guy.
Oh, I did have a 18-22 year old guy ask me one time, "what kind of car is that?"
happygounlucky86 Nov 27th, 07, 2:48 AM Oh, I did have a 18-22 year old guy ask me one time, "what kind of car is that?"

MalibuSeaS Nov 27th, 07, 8:11 AM I love the attention it brings and I love the comments from the smart and sometimes not so knowledgeable car guy.
NO!!! :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:
thunderstruck507 Nov 27th, 07, 2:08 PM No sir...anything but. People love these cars!
I still get thumbs up and waves ect even though my paint is still messed up from my accident and has started peeling on the roof. Hell, I havent even hand washed it since July.
I had a buddy with a 95 camaro with a LT1 and 6 speed swapped from a newer camaro, used to get so annoyed that my car got all the attention even though he's making over 400 HP and would whip me all day long. His car even sounded meaner.
Your just not catching them looking!
busterwivell Nov 27th, 07, 2:58 PM I get that also. I was 6 years old when my cars where built!
LOL..........I was in basic training at Ft Leonard Wood, Mo when my 66 was built.......beginning a short career as a hired killer.
davoaz Nov 27th, 07, 3:20 PM I remember when people would flash their lights at you it ment there was a cop with a radar gun around the corner. Now people think it's a gang initiation thing. :D
Closest I'm ever going to get to rock star fame is when I'm driving my chevelle around town.

VMXRACER Nov 27th, 07, 7:28 PM I know that your saying Mike but you know what? When I was in high school I bought my car because I liked it. I didn't care what anyone else thought then and I don't care now. Don't get me wrong, I like when people come up to me and says "Nice car" but I'm just as happy that everyones not into our hobby. Besides,I kinda like bein a dinosaur.
