I just wiped an exhaust lobe in my 305, need some suggestions.

-1986 Cutlass, 3600lbs, 200-4R, stock stall, 3.73 gears
-Stock 305 short block, 8.3:1 CR
-1 1/2" headers, 2 1/4" dual exhaust,
-Edelbrock RPM intake, 650 Holley Vac Sec carb,
-Ported 416 heads

Current cam is Summit special 214/224, with Z28 springs. The cam right now is a little big. I thinking of going with something around 204/214. In the that range. I wouldn't mind trying an UD/Lunati cam. I was also thing of going with a small solid cam. The Z28 springs have to stay.

What do you guys think? 205/215 range sound about right? I would like to stay with a dual pattern. If I go solid I need to add about 10deg of duration right? So 215/225 range for solid.

Thanks for any help.

I am leaning towards a XE250H or a XE256H. Any ideas.

I can't recommend you anything. But i'll list you some of UD's smallest hyd cams and the Lunati PN#s

254/262 199/207 .401/.432 112lsa 301A1LUN

262/266 207/211 .432/.441 112lsa 301A2LUN

266/272 211/217 .441/.454 110lsa 301A3LUN

Here's a very small UD cam, but it's not listed on Lunati's site, so i dunn if it's available.

246/254 192/199 .393/.401 108lsa

I ran the XE268H in basically your exact combo, except in a 84 Monte. Stock shortblock 305, home ported heads, through a TH350, mild converter, and 4.11's. It was a little soggy off idle, but it ran 14oh's. The small valves, small ports helped tame the cam alot. I would use the 256.

Smart man. :D I installed the XE256 this afternoon. The DCR should have gone from 6.7 to 7.1 The 256 has 14deg less advertised duration. So far so good. Have to dial in car some more. 2" more vacum at idle and seem to have some more down low.

I was really thinking of going with the XS256 solid, but it would have taken a while to get. Weird thing is the old cam looked pretty good. The exhaust lifter on #6 looked like it had more wear then the rest, but still seemed to have a little concave. I think I will make up a fixture tommorrow and check it with a dial indicator.

Still looking for opinions on using the XE256.

Thanks
Steve
