: Best Brand Of Camshafts - Please Cast Your Vote
leejoy Nov 23rd, 07, 12:45 PM Hi guys --
You may have seen my other posts about my situation. I will be looking for new engine parts to solve my current crisis. Among the components I will need is a new camshaft. I havent decided if I will go with solid or hydraulic flat tappet, but it will be one of those 2 choices. This is for a street/strip 454 chevy application (mostly street).
Please select your favorite most reliable brand of camshafts and reply to this post. After I get 20-30 replies I will count them up and choose the brand of camshafts from there. Then I will go to that manufacturers catalog and select a camshaft kit that I feel is best for my situation (2500-6000 RPM) range, dual plane manifold, 3.90 gear, 3000 stall converter.
thanks
lee
wildman926 Nov 23rd, 07, 1:02 PM As you know, this site favors Lunati, particularly the cams that Harold Brookshire designed, and for good reason......THEY WORK.
Solid FT gets my vote.
This is what I would use, and will use on my old 454 combo...

Solid; Fair idle. Good cam for high performance street or mild bracket racing applications. Needs 3000 RPM stall converter, headers, 9.5:1 compression ratio and 3.73 gearing or better.

dreis454 Nov 23rd, 07, 1:12 PM Not that I'm voodoo biased but I'd opt for the Lunati voodoo 60204 for that app.
MY FYN 79 Nov 23rd, 07, 1:21 PM I predict the outcome is going to have a lot of votes for either Isky or Lunati, and for good reason. Either will be able to supply you with a great camshaft. As a side note also, dont be afraid to call and talk to these companies regarding which grind they'd prefer you'd stick in your motor.
trmnatr Nov 23rd, 07, 3:14 PM Crane,Lunati/Ultradyne
If it was a full race roller cam i would say Crane, Comp, Lunati/Ultradyne is my opnion, a full blown roller race can has to be one of these in my opinion.
The problem with comp flat tappet grinds is they concentrate on the race stuff, crane is almost as bad but do produce good flat tappet cams because they make 99% of o.e cams out there. Flat tappet i would lean more to Lunati/Ultradyne due to the fact Crane and Comp are geared towards super stock, pro stock and top fuel

Swyper Nov 24th, 07, 1:35 AM Lunati Voodoo
Vintage Musclecar Nov 24th, 07, 8:01 AM I've always had great results with Crane.

Doug Garland Nov 24th, 07, 9:27 PM I've always heard that there are only @3-4 camshaft makers/grinders in the business and they do all the work , and they then ship them out to the respective companies for packaging. That is the reason many of the cams from different companies have the same specs. I prefer Lunati also, which is now a division of Holley, if I remember correctly.

GolfisSerious Nov 25th, 07, 1:38 AM I recommend isky and flat tappet for street... solid for drag and some street... lots more maintenance with solid roller...
novaderrik Nov 25th, 07, 2:27 AM Speed Pro- someone had to vote for the generic stick that everyone else puts in their boxes and sells as their own.
ss monte Nov 25th, 07, 6:03 AM Hi i would go for the lunati voodoo series, excelent power and torque curve hydro or solid.
mr 4 speed Nov 25th, 07, 7:09 AM A big fan of Ultradyne,Engle,Crane and Summit brand flat tappet cams
Tom Mobley Nov 25th, 07, 4:32 PM Isky, Crane, Crower, Lunati, Bullet, Reed, Engle.
