Does anyone know how many of these were built? I can't find a break down of non production colors(or production colors).

You can't find that information because it was never recorded.

No records were kept on car colors.

As Dean noted, no color information was ever kept even for standard colors. Since the 1970 did not have orange as a normally optional color, all orange (or any other color not normally optional) would have been special order (RPO ZP3) items subject to approval by FS&O (or COPO if you prefer). Any color available at the time, from any source, was available under this RPO except the Cadillac Firemist due to the coarse metallic & work involved. Plum Crazy, Kelly Green, Metallic Gold, Caroloina Blue, and even pink plus hundreds of other colors was available through special order.

fwiw - Orange was a fleet color. The Michigan DOT, whom I worked from for 30 yrs got all their trucks in orange. So do did many other local government agencies. I can recall when I started in 1972 we had many El Camino's in orange dating back to 1969 models. The maint, division supervisors drove them. There were millions of orange vehicles over the years, I had a suburban but the Furds and Dudges came in orange also.

What is the plant the car came from, my car came from arlington, my dealership ordered several cars huggar orange, camaro gold, and citrus green. if this car was a special order color, it will have a blank paint code just blank no dashes -- or xx's, if it has flapper and hood pins then it should be a stripe delete car. with either a -- or xx.

Or...it could simply have the DuPont mixing code color on the trim tag. Here's a Van Nuys 70 Chevelle with DuPont's code for orange; sometimes referred to by the FS&O group as 'Road Commission Orange'. ;)

No, I don't think so. In this case, the car probably came in with no stripes and the owner paid to get the dealership to put them on in this color. Stripes are either white or black.

that's what i figured, although i have seen quite a few white cars with orange stripes and a few black cars with orange/cranberry stripes and always wondered. let me tell you though, the plum crazy stripes on that black SS looked sharp. i figured it possibly might have been ordered, with ZL2 hood and all.

Yeah, we had a guy here in this area that had a forest green 70 that had light gold stripes. Talk about poo on a white horse!
Like I said, dealers would do, and still do whatever it takes to get your butt in the seat. "You want Maroon stripes on that there light blue 70 SS?? SUUURRRRRRE, No problem!! "

The car is an Atlanta built car. It has two dashes on the trim tag and the build sheet has the paint code or formula hand written. The car doesn't have a cowl induction hood. It does have black stripes and it is also noted on the build sheet about the black stripes in the area that is hand written.

Sounds like an interesting car. What and where was the dealer that ordered it?

I was on a website and found a picture of a build sheet that looked almost identical to mine with the color code hand written and that the strips should be painted black. I can't find it now! I searched ChevelleStuff.com because I thought that was where I saw it before but I can't find it now. Can someone email me so if they know what site it is on. Thanks,Joe
