: Advice / Opinions: Painting 70'Chevelle Matte Black with Gloss
Hey Everyone,
I'm looking for everyone’s opinions advice about this idea...
Right now I'm still in the process of assembling the front clip (time factor..), so I can get
the rear qrts replaced. Once all that is completed, I'm planning on getting it painted. My car is a 70'Chevelle and for the longest time I've been interested in painting it dark black, super glossy. Something I was contemplating doing is, doing the reverse and painting the car matte black with gloss. This isn't something I've seen on a chevelle.
Has anyone done this or seen it? Anyone know how this would hold up, maintenance etc... ?
I've attached a bunch of samples so people get an idea, any comments are appreciated!
Thanks!
Wow, I'm surprised... no comments!

happygounlucky86 Nov 26th, 07, 6:52 PM what he said... I think it looks kinda cool, a bit like primer.
.laughs. No worries now... it's just playing with ideas.
sevt_chevelle Nov 26th, 07, 7:18 PM Personally could care less what you do, but Id use a single stage URETHANE or baseclear.
What ever you do, do NOT listen to the guy that painted this rust bucket with john deere blitz black:sad:
Also painting a flat black can be hard because if you dont get your spray pattern right you will have streaks of low and higher gloss paint because of the diffference in flim build. Even with a clear coat that has been flattned or preflat this can happen, so practice and watch your pattern.

Thanks for the info! Stuff like this is what I'm looking for. I'm still interested in doing a dark glossy black, but this just came up as an idea to explore.

I don't usually comment on these type of post, but I have to agree with Von on this one. :)
454RAT Nov 26th, 07, 9:28 PM Dare to be different! I've thought about painting mine Gloss black with Flat Black SS stripes. I would love to see a Photo Shop rendering of a Matte Black 70 Chevelle with maybe Gloss Black stripes.
vern Nov 27th, 07, 9:24 PM Some of the paint companies sell a semigloss black that is a paint and not a primer so it will hold up just fine.On the tv show "Trucks"they painted their ford pickup with this.I think they used a Dupont product.

Thought I should chime in since i've honestly thought of doing the same. It has the potential to look mean in a retro sort of way. I just don't have the courage to do it so i'm keeping mine with the traditional colors. I'm also not in looking for a trendy look on my chevelle. Perhaps if I had multiple cars then I would paint one flat black with a clear coat just to satisfy those special moods :)
Someone also mentioned earlier it's more difficult to paint flat black. I've heard this from a few sources and also recently from one of the shows on Power Block.
