View Full Version : Trial lowering a 69
I think I want to lower the front of my 69, but I want to see if I really like it lowered and how much I want to lower it before I spend alot of money.
A couple of my friends suggested I get some of those spring compressors from AutoZone to lower it temporarally just to see how I like it.
Then I would buy/cut the springs accordingly to get the amount of drop I want. (mabe 1"-1.5")
My question is, do these things work and are they safe and how long can I leave them on the car?
I figured if they work, I would drive the car for a while to make sure I like the look and It doesn't bottom out on small rocks or frogs. lol
Any input would be appreciated T.C.

Lou Merrell Nov 22nd, 07, 5:56 AM If your talking about driving this car around while having spring compressors installed, I don't think that would be advisable. I don't know to much about suspension geometry but from a safety standpoint this just does'nt sound right. Hopefully, somebody else will chime in.
Dan Orgill Nov 22nd, 07, 6:42 AM TC, the only spring compressors I know of are the ones used for removing the springs. They aren't meant to be driven around with.
I would rent a spring compressor, and take some pics and measurements to see what you like. I know you won't be able to drive it to see how it handles, but at least you could see how it looks.
Thanks for the replies:
I was told they make a clamp that goes around two coils kind of like a "U" clamp.
They say it would go around two coils and when ya tighten the clamp the coils come together lowering the car?
I wasn't planning on driving the car with a tool made to take the springs out of the car.

MikeyB Nov 23rd, 07, 5:52 PM I' m sure, with my connections, I could find you a couple of 350lb. lady heffers to sit on your hood and you could see if you like the look, including the hood dents!!!! I'll give you a yell tomorrow.
MikeyB Nov 23rd, 07, 5:54 PM And, oh yea, it could be possible for YOU to drive around with a tool that is used to remove springs,,, after all, we know a guy who doesn't have passing gear!!!!!!!!!!!
Elviss 1971 Nov 24th, 07, 12:08 PM I know what type of spring clamps you are talking about as I bought a set a long time ago(20 years). My experience with them was not positive. I thought the car rode terrible and it was difficult to adjust each side the same . Go with 1 inch drop coils and I am sure you will be happy. :)
Thanks for the replies:
I found the parts I was looking for , but there is no way to get them into the springs and if I did I couldnt tighten the bolts.
So I guess I will take them back, I just wanted to use them to see if I liked the drop and the amount of drop I wanted?
I wasn't going to leave them for any amount of time.
Also I have a ramp leading into my garage so I cant go to low or Ill hit my headers.
Yes, I know Mike maybe only one 350 lb Heffer, does that = 1/2" do you know the ratio?
